Here’s my personal opinion on this topic.

Once the GX 550 came out and I saw the interior quality along with the questionable 3.4L turbocharged V6 reliability of the LX 600, Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia, I started to pull back from looking at Lexus vehicles in the future.

Let me explain, I have a 2017 Lexus GX 460 which I absolutely love because it looks great, has impressive off-road capability, luxurious interior with soft leather and wood panel trims, and a solid powertrain with it’s V8 that lasts a really long time.

The GX 550 in my personal opinion does not offer any of this apart from a really rugged looking exterior.

It also has a third row that folds into the floor which the GX 550 does not offer in non Overtrail trims where as my Lexus GX 460 has a third row along with crawl control/MTS and KDSS which again the GX 550 does not offer in non Overtrail trims.

The sealing of the deal for me to walk way from Lexus for my next vehicle in addition to all the items I expressed is the questionable reliability of the new V6 turbo powertrain where Lexus and Toyota are known for their solid long term reliability, for example the 4.6L V8 in my Lexus GX 460.

I recently sat inside a GX 550 and it definitely looked and felt just “premium” instead of “luxury”, where my GX 460 looks and feels luxurious on the inside.

And to top all this, the prices of Lexus vehicles are still expensive. For example, the GX 460 provided more value when buying new vs a GX 550 with all the interior niceties and off-road features that the GX 460 provided.

It’s really sad because I really do love Lexus and Toyota products but I will be looking into other manufactures at least for my next SUV such as a Nissan Armada or a GMC Yukon Denali diesel which offer more space and luxuries to me personally than even an LX 600 does which I have sat in and was unimpressed at the quality and interior space given it’s price point.

One thing I do want to add however is the service experience I’ve had at my local Lexus dealership is phenomenal. They have always treated me well and I actually enjoy my experience at the Lexus dealership when servicing my GX 460.
