Gear Reviews vs. Filmmaking

It’s fascinating how gear reviews often draw larger audiences on YouTube than original creative content. YouTube is often drawn to specs, side-by-side comparisons, and expert opinions on the latest tools. Understanding your gear is important...

However, when that same gear is used in real-world filmmaking—solving on-set challenges, capturing authentic moments, and bringing stories to life—this interest sometimes isn’t the same. It is something I've heard many creators comment on.

Here are some reasons why I think this might happen:

1) Original content on YouTube may be less compelling than the craft people have developed around talking about gear.

2) When it's not directly about the gear, but showing it in use or story-driven—it is less about simply buying the right tools and therefore of less interest.

3) YouTube might not be an ideal platform for audiences seeking more meaningful films.

As filmmakers, we know that spec sheets only take you so far—the real lessons come from both making and seeing the craft in action. So here’s to those who stick around for the final cut and to those who craft stories as well as reviews. Would you agree with any of these statements, or do you think it's something entirely different?

Whether you experience this or not don't stop creating.

A new video is coming soon — a short documentary filmed with both anamorphic and spherical lenses. More importantly, it shares a story that might inspire you or be something you can relate to. Keep an eye out, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
