Mbappė's spot kick rescues a 1 - 1 draw for Real Madrid at Girona
Real Madrid escaped defeat in Girona thanks to Kylian Mbappé’s 67th‑minute spot‑kick, which cancelled out a first‑half lead for the home side. The French forward, who has now scored 23 goals in 19 games this season, tucked the ball low past goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga after Vinícius Jr was fouled by Hugo Rincon in the box.
Girona, sitting third‑from‑bottom with 12 points, had taken the lead just before halftime through Azzedine Ounahi’s strike. The hosts pressed hard, limiting Real’s attacking output, and doubled their advantage on the counter‑attack when Ounahi’s first‑time shot from the edge of the area found the top corner.
Madrid’s early chances were limited – they managed only one shot on target in the opening period – and an early goal was ruled out after the referee deemed Mbappé’s effort to have hit his hand. The second half saw a shift in approach: Xabi Alonso’s side pressed higher, creating quick chances through the middle. Vinícius Jr. was involved in several promising moves, though a goal was disallowed for offside.
The draw leaves Real second in La Liga, one point behind leaders Barcelona, and extends their winless streak to five matches in all competitions, with only one victory in that span. Girona remain in the relegation zone, but the point was a hard‑earned reward for their disciplined performance.

Real Madrid walk away from Konaté chase
Real Madrid have quietly shelved their 2026 bid for Liverpool’s French centre‑back Ibrahima Konaté. The Spanish giants, who had the 26‑year‑old on a shortlist to plug a leaky central defence, told Liverpool they’re no longer pursuing the player ¹ ².
The change of heart comes after a sharp dip in Konaté’s form. A calamitous Champions‑League night against PSV Eindhoven – where he was directly at fault for the fourth goal in a 4‑1 loss – sparked fresh criticism and highlighted his recent struggles. This season he’s managed just 12 Premier League appearances and, despite chipping in with a goal in five games, his overall impact has been far from the dominant force that helped Liverpool clinch the 2024‑25 Premier League title ³.
Liverpool, still trying to recapture that title‑winning momentum, are now in a stronger negotiating position. The Reds have put a fresh contract proposal on the table, but nothing is set in stone yet. Konaté’s current deal runs out in June 2026, leaving the door open for a free‑transfer move – a scenario that had previously attracted Real Madrid’s interest ² ³.
With the Frenchman’s future still undecided, Real Madrid have shifted their focus to other centre‑back options, reportedly eyeing Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano as a more reliable fit for Xabi Alonso’s system ².
So, while Konaté remains a key figure at Anfield for now, the Spanish giants have moved on, leaving the Reds with a chance to lock him down before the January pre‑contract window opens.

ECONOMIC GOVERNANCE PLATFORM UNVEILS REPORT ON GHANA'S DEBT SUSTAINABILITY
New EGP report exposes Ghana's debt woes, pinpointing fiscal mismanagement, weak procurement practices, and lack of transparency as key drivers of the country's escalating debt crisis. The report sheds light on the structural deficiencies underlying Ghana's debt landscape, emphasizing the need for reforms to ensure sustainable economic governance.
Ghana's fiscal policy has been criticized for being procyclical, with significant fiscal slippages around election periods. A report titled "Sustainable Debt Management in Ghana" reveals that these slippages are driven by expenditure overruns on public sector wages, subsidies, and flagship social programs.
The report also highlights weaknesses in Ghana's procurement regime, with nearly 86% of high-value government contracts awarded through sole-sourcing or restricted tendering between 2012 and 2021.
Furthermore, the government has been accused of underreporting debt exposure, with actual debt levels potentially exceeding official figures. Prior to engaging with the IMF-supported program, official figures pegged debt at 75.9% of GDP, while a joint IMF-World Bank Debt Sustainability Analysis placed the present value debt-to-GDP ratio at 105%. This discrepancy has raised concerns about debt transparency and sustainability.
The report also criticizes the Bank of Ghana's role in deficit financing, particularly through overdraft facilities that contributed to inflation. To address these issues, experts recommend establishing an independent Fiscal Council to oversee government borrowing and expenditure. This council would provide non-partisan oversight, ensuring fiscal discipline and enhancing debt accountability.
Additionally, the report suggests clearer separation of roles between debt operations and liquidity management, with strengthened oversight over the central bank's discretionary powers. These reforms aim to promote sustainable economic governance and reduce Ghana's debt burden.
The findings of this report highlight the need for Ghana to reassess its fiscal policies and debt management strategies to ensure a more sustainable economic future.

No Fees Stress' policy affirms education as fundamental right - President Mahama
The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has launched the No Fees Stress policy, a flagship initiative aimed at making tertiary education more accessible and affordable for Ghanaians. Speaking at the launch in Koforidua, Mahama emphasized that education is a right, not a privilege for the wealthy.
The policy will cover academic-related fees for first-year students admitted to public tertiary institutions, including colleges of education. President Mahama highlighted that thousands of students had previously been forced to drop out or defer due to unaffordable fees, despite securing admission.
Key features of the policy include:
- Free tertiary education for persons with disabilities
- Expanded Student Loan Plus scheme
- Targeted scholarships for underrepresented communities
The initiative aims to restore fairness in Ghana's education system and bridge the gap between socioeconomic backgrounds. Mahama noted that available loans were insufficient to cover fees, and the policy seeks to address this issue.
The No Fees Stress policy was a key campaign promise by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the last general election. First-year students who paid fees earlier this year have already been reimbursed by the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).
President Mahama's vision for education emphasizes its role in addressing inequalities and realizing young people's dreams. The policy's objective is not only access but also restoring fairness in Ghana's education system.
