Learn to paint stunning landscapes with me. Doors open this week!
Life is quite hectic, so I wanted to paint something calm. I love how the pale blue of the Pacific Ocean compliments the siennas in these showy coastal grasses. I’ve always found painting to be a peaceful respite from the everyday noise and turbulence that surrounds us. It was quite nice to tap into that mood for this painting and escape a little bit. I hope you enjoy the results.

This one is for my dad who I lost recently. He was a research meteorologist who studied hail storms. As a child, I’d often join him on research projects out on the plains. If we came across a storm like this while driving, we’d definitely be stopping the car and getting out to watch. He’d always be explaining the mechanics of weather systems to me and I loved it. I so cherish his fascination for the way the world works.
I love how thunderstorms build up quickly and march along the Gulf Coast of Florida. This vaguely refers to one of my favorite paintings, The Giant by NC Wyeth. I’ve always been inspired by the elder Wyeth’s paintings packed with color and drama.
It’s a lot of fun to paint big colorful skies. You’ll find the iconic Race Point Lighthouse on the very tip of Cape Cod near Provincetown. Big thanks to Allie Richards for letting me use her lovely photo as a reference for this painting. I hope you like the results!
I enjoy working on commissions, but this one took a while to come to life. My client set a goal to commission an original piece of art for her space. We talked about many concepts over the last few months. My client has a real passion for the outdoors and adventurous road trips through the desert landscapes of the American southwest, so it was important to capture that feeling here.
Watching the sun come up at anchor on a sailboat is one of my favorite things to do. Rising early, I step lightly in the dark and brew the coffee quietly so as not to wake the rest of the boat. It's an incredibly peaceful moment to sit there silently and watch the sky put on this epic show. This morning was particularly stunning as passing squalls built up along the eastern horizon as the sun burst up between them. I love to take a favorite memory like this and record it in paint.
I’m fascinated by the geography of the tidal waterways and salt marshes of South Carolina’s Lowcountry region. These meandering rivers ebb and flow with the tidal rhythms of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
I love painting beautiful skies. It’s fun and challenging to nail all the colors and make them work together to create drama and depth. Pictured here is a lovely evening walk near Portsmouth in Rhode Island.
