This was fun to paint. The wide open landscapes of the southwest are the perfect setting for an amazing sky filled with vibrant color. It’s fun to paint the iconic and unique plants that grow there, too.
Flowers make me happy, and every year I try to paint some of my favorites. Purple coneflowers—also known as echinacea—are native to North American prairies, but they’ve become a beloved summer bloom in gardens around the world. I actually just spotted some beautiful ones down the block on a recent walk through the neighborhood.
As soon as the weather starts to warm up, I start thinking about fun summer days. Actually, I’m probably always thinking about fun summer days. This happy scene is inspired by my memories of vacations on Cape Cod. There’s something so peaceful and soothing thinking about drinking lemonade on that porch looking out at the sea on a bright summer’s day. I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I enjoyed painting it! Cheers.
A few years back, my family and I spent a couple months living in Sedona, Arizona working, painting and hiking. All that time gave us the opportunity to really explore the region and its many natural treasures. Our trips up into Southern Utah were some of my favorites.
Life is quite hectic, so I wanted to paint something calm. I love how the pale blue of the Pacific Ocean compliments the siennas in these showy coastal grasses. I’ve always found painting to be a peaceful respite from the everyday noise and turbulence that surrounds us. It was quite nice to tap into that mood for this painting and escape a little bit. I hope you enjoy the results.
This one is for my dad who I lost a year ago. He was a research meteorologist who studied hail storms. As a child, I’d often join him on research projects out on the plains. If we came across a storm like this while driving, we’d definitely be stopping the car and getting out to watch. He’d always be explaining the mechanics of weather systems to me and I loved it. I so cherish his fascination for the way the world works.
