There’s really few things better than walking barefoot in the wet sand along a beautiful stretch of beach. I’ve skipped a lot of rocks in situations like this. I don’t often include figures in my work, but I thought this ambling group helped set the mood I was going for. I hope you enjoy the results!
One of the best road trips I’ve ever taken was driving down the California coast. Pictured here is Morro Bay about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Oddly, I’ve never painted a vehicle before, so it was fun to try something new with this classic Volkswagen Westfalia camper van.
One of my favorite ways to spend time outdoors is to fish for trout. Fly fishing has gotten me waist deep into some of the most visually stunning spots I’ve ever seen. For me it’s often more about catching those moments of beauty than catching a fish. Still, I can’t pass by any bit of moving water without trying to read the surface of the water in order to understand what’s going on below. This painting is my love letter to those times when I’ve found myself immersed in truly amazing beauty.
I took a fun trip to Rome with my teenage son in 2022. The art and food was amazing, but my favorite part was just walking around the streets. It’s so picturesque with its cobblestoned streets, hodgepodge of architecture and, of course, quite a few Vespas. You probably know by now that I adore the great outdoors, but I’m also a huge fan of big cities and I love to immerse myself in their energy whenever I can. One of my ongoing goals is to paint more things I love from the cities I love. Stay tuned!
My son and I spent a week biking from Salzburg to Vienna in Austria. I was particularly struck by the fields of sunflowers growing on the hillsides as we passed through the little villages and farms of the beautiful Wachau Region. Magical!
Moving upslope from the dry rocky coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, things change quickly. Spotty patches of bleached grass suddenly give way to lush rolling fields of green. Emerald hills undulate for miles and island cattle ranchers use them as grazing lands. I love how these Black Angus cattle stand out as they find their way home at the end of the day through endless waves of long verdant grasses. I hope you enjoy!
Right after I was married, my wife and I lived high up in the Colorado Rockies for a couple years. In the fall, one of the most magical things you could do is walk through a grove of Quaking Aspens on a sunny day. The sunlight would illuminate all those jittery golden leaves creating a flickering glow all around you.
I’ve been daydreaming a lot about places I’d love to visit someday and paint. This is a view of the Amalfi Coast from Praiano where lemons grow on the steep cliff sides above the brilliant blue Mediterranean Sea.
Friends, I love to travel. I have been lucky to see a bit of the world in my life. I’m almost always thinking about new places I’d like to visit and paint. Most of the time these thoughts are just idle day dreams, but at least experience places vicariously by painting them.
Thanks to photographer Lasse Hysvær for allowing me to use his beautiful photo of a lake in Norway as a reference for this painting. Enjoy!
