For decades, the horse industry followed fairly predictable cycles. Demand would rise, then cool off, and prices generally stayed within a reasonable range. Then 2020 arrived, and suddenly the equine world experienced something few people could have imagined.

Horse prices climbed.

Waiting lists grew.

Quality horses became harder to find.

Equipment became more expensive.

Transportation costs increased.

People began asking one question:

Did COVID-19 cause all of this?

The answer is yes—but it wasn’t the only reason.

COVID Changed How People Viewed Life

If you’ve followed Haste Draft Horses & Mules for very long, you’ve probably heard me say it more than once:

“They just don’t build them like they used to.”

Now before anyone gets upset, let me make something very clear. This isn’t meant to criticize breeders or anyone’s personal preference. The modern hitch horse has its place, and there are some absolutely beautiful horses in today’s Belgian and Percheron registries.

But for me…

They simply aren’t the kind of draft horses I grew up admiring.

What Is an Old Style Draft Horse?

When I think about a draft horse, I think about the horses that built America.

These were the horses that plowed fields from daylight until dark, logged timber through the mountains, hauled freight into town, harvested crops, and fed families. They weren’t bred to spend a few minutes in a show ring.

They were bred to work.

Old style draft horses were known for their:

* Heavy bone
* Wide chest
* Deep heart girth
* Massive hindquarters
* Thick neck
* Broad hips
* Large feet
* Strong joints
* Calm disposition
* Willing attitude
* Incredible endurance

They weren’t elegant.

They weren’t refined.

They were powerful, practical, and dependable.

The Rise of the Modern Hitch Horse

Over the last several decades, breeding priorities have changed.

Many breeders have focused on producing horses that excel in hitch competition and exhibition. Those horses often have:

* Taller frames
* Longer legs
* More refined bodies
* Longer necks
* More animation
* Flashier movement
* Greater emphasis on appearance in the show ring

There is certainly skill involved in producing horses that compete at a high level, and many people enjoy that style.

But when I look at many modern Belgian and Percheron horses, I don’t see the same type of horse that spent generations working America’s farms.

I see a different purpose.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that taller automatically means stronger.

That simply isn’t true.

A horse standing 18 or 19 hands tall isn’t necessarily more capable of doing a day’s work than a well-built 16.2 or 17-hand horse carrying significantly more substance.

Strength comes from:

* Bone
* Muscle
* Structure
* Balance
* Conditioning
* Heart

Not simply height.

Many of the old farm horses would be considered “shorter” by today’s standards, yet they possessed incredible pulling ability because they were built correctly.

Why We Prefer Old Style Draft Horses

At Haste Draft Horses & Mules, we’re constantly searching for what I call **real working drafts**.

These are horses that still remind me of the generations before us.

The kind with:

* Thick bone
* Heavy muscle
* Long tails
* Quiet minds
* Honest dispositions
* Broad, powerful frames
* The ability to stand patiently
* Experience doing real farm work

Those qualities matter to us because most of our customers aren’t buying horses simply to admire.

They’re buying partners.

Many of our customers use their horses for:

* Wagon rides
* Homesteading
* Farming
* Logging
* Pleasure driving
* Demonstrations
* Family enjoyment
* Ranch work
* Living history events

These jobs require horses that think, work, and stay dependable.

Temperament Matters Just as Much

A beautiful horse means very little if it doesn’t have the mind to match.

One of the reasons we place so much emphasis on old-style working horses is because generations of practical work often selected for horses that were willing, steady, and easy to handle.

A calm horse that stands quietly, works willingly, and learns quickly is worth far more than one that simply catches your eye.

Preserving a Piece of Agricultural History

America’s draft horses helped build this country.

Before tractors, they were the horsepower that powered farms, businesses, logging camps, mines, and transportation.

That history deserves to be preserved.

Not just in photographs.

Not just in museums.

But through horses that still resemble those hardworking animals from generations ago.

When someone tells me they want an old style Belgian or an old style Percheron, I know exactly what they’re talking about.

They’re looking for substance.

They’re looking for character.

They’re looking for a horse that looks like it belongs in an old farming photograph instead of under arena lights.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and we certainly respect those who enjoy modern hitch horses.

They’re impressive in their own right and represent years of careful breeding for a different purpose.

Our focus, however, has always been different.

We look for draft horses that still embody the qualities that made these breeds famous in the first place—strength, honesty, quiet minds, and the ability to put in a full day’s work.

Those are the horses we enjoy finding.

Those are the horses we enjoy selling.

And those are the horses we believe represent the true spirit of the American draft horse.

Has Line Breeding Changed the Horses?

Another difference I’ve noticed over the years is the amount of line breeding found in some modern hitch-bred bloodlines. Line breeding has long been a tool used by breeders to reinforce desirable traits, and when done thoughtfully it can produce outstanding horses.

However, in my own experience, I believe some programs have taken it too far. I’ve been around enough horses to feel that, in some cases, breeding too closely generation after generation can also reinforce traits that aren’t desirable. I’ve seen horses that seem more reactive, harder to settle, or simply don’t have the steady, dependable mindset that I personally look for in a working draft horse.

That’s my opinion based on the horses I’ve handled over the years, and others may see it differently.

For me, the ideal draft horse is one that is mentally as solid as it is physically. I want a horse that can think through a situation, stand patiently when asked, work all day, and be trusted by the family holding the lines. That dependable disposition is every bit as important as heavy bone, muscle, and substance.

It’s one more reason why I continue to seek out old-style working bloodlines. In my experience, those horses tend to have the kind of quiet minds and practical attitudes that made draft horses famous long before the modern hitch arena became the focus.

This is what our channel is really all about.

Many of you know Michael Moses from the Maryville, Tennessee area through the comments and our YouTube community. Michael is disabled and isn't able to get a driver's license, so his horse means so much more than just having an animal—it's a part of his everyday life.

Sadly, his faithful horse was 25 years old and simply couldn't do everything he needed anymore. With a limited income, buying another horse just wasn't possible.

Then something incredible happened...

**YOU stepped up.**

Through donations from some of the most generous people we've ever met, we were able to buy Michael a wonderful horse, a brand-new harness, and personally deliver everything to him. Spending the day with Michael and seeing the smile on his face is something Henry and I will never forget.

Even better, our transporter accepts Canadian (CAD) funds, making payment much easier for our Canadian customers. That eliminates one more hurdle and helps simplify the entire process. We also have shipped to Mexico often and can make that happen so easy for you as well.
