World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October, calling for stronger action to protect and expand mental health support in times of crisis.
This yearâs theme, âAccess to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,â highlights the urgent need to ensure mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) reaches people affected by conflict, disaster, and displacement. In 2025, this call is more pressing than ever as humanitarian needs continue to rise worldwide.
In emergencies, one in three people experience a mental health condition, and one in twenty face severe conditions. Displacement and disrupted health systems make access to care even harder, particularly for migrants, who often face legal and social barriers even before crises.
MHPSS is a lifesaving intervention. It prevents long-term harm, reduces suicide risks, and enables people to cope and recover under extreme stress. Beyond survival, MHPSS is essential for resilience, protection, and rebuilding communities.
Despite its importance, global MHPSS programmes face significant funding cuts, threatening access for more than 500,000 people in 2025 alone. With only 2 per cent of national health budgets worldwide allocated to mental health, this gap risks undoing decades of progress.
On this World Mental Health Day, IOM calls for sustained investment, collaboration, and solidarity. Together, we must ensure that all people affected by crises have access to the care they need.

World Teachersâ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education. World Teachersâ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.
World Teachersâ Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).

"On this World Teachersâ Day, UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF and Education International call on governments, partners and the international community to make a collective commitment to ensuring that collaboration is recognized as a norm within the teaching profession â because it is only through effective cooperation at all levels that we can build truly inclusive, equitable and resilient education systems worldwide."
2025 celebrations
Teachers play vital roles in education systems, driving learning, inclusion, and innovation in schools and societies. Yet many work without collaborative structures to support their pedagogy, agency, professionalism or well-being. In many systems, the profession remains marked by isolation, fragmented structures and limited opportunities to build networks with peers, mentors and school leaders, affecting both educational quality and teacher retention.
This year, World Teachersâ Day celebrations will centre on the theme âRecasting teaching as a collaborative profession,â highlighting the transformative potential of collaboration for teachers, schools and education systems. Reframing teaching as inherently collaborative â supported by policies, practices, and environments that value mutual support, shared expertise, and joint responsibility â is essential to strengthen teaching, learning, and teachersâ professional fulfilment.
A global celebration will take place in the framework of the Pan-African Conference on Teacher Education (PACTED) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The programme will open with statements from high-level representatives of the co-convening partners â UNESCO, UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and Education International â followed by a ministerial panel, moderated by the African Union, on the topic âFrom isolation to collective strength: Reenvisioning the teaching profession through the lens of collaboration.â
Other celebrations will take place around the world.
