📖 This Shabbat We Study Parashat Yitro (Jethro)

Torah Portion: Yitro
Torah Reading: Exodus 18:1–20:23
Prophetic Reading: Isaiah 6:1–7:6; 9:5–6 (6–7)

“The Head Covering”

In Parashat Yitro, HaShem declares His purpose for Israel:
“You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy people.” (Exodus 19:6)

This calling helps us understand why head covering holds meaning within Jewish tradition. In the Torah, priests covered their heads as an expression of reverence and service before HaShem. Over time, this practice became a reminder of Israel’s priestly identity and the hope of a future kingdom where all will serve Him.

Questions often arise from I Corinthians 11 regarding head covering. Yet a careful reading shows that Paul is addressing issues of modesty and cultural context, not garments or hats. His focus is the heart, conduct, and sensitivity within the community of faith.

Parashat Yitro reminds us that true reverence is not found in external symbols alone, but in humility, obedience, and love—living in a way that honors HaShem and does not become a stumbling block to others.

🕊️ May this Shabbat remind us
that our identity comes from HaShem,
our freedom is guided by wisdom,
and our conduct reflects reverence and love.

The rebellion of Korah in Numbers 16 reveals a powerful warning about false worship, jealousy, and resisting G-d’s divine order.

In this teaching, Dr. Baruch Korman explains how true authority comes from obedience, why G-d judged Korah so severely, and what this passage teaches us about biblical worship today.

Discover:
• Why Scripture calls Korah’s group “witnesses”
• How G-d reveals His chosen servants
• The connection between worship, obedience, and judgment
• Why worship must always align with G-d’s will

This sobering passage reminds us that G-d is holy, His judgments are righteous, and true worship is never defined by human preference.

Biblical worship requires submission to G-d’s will

This message teaches that true worship never originates from human desire but from obedience to G-d’s word. Using Leviticus 10 and the example of Nadav and Avihu, it shows the danger of worshiping G-d in ways He did not command.

The teaching explains the connection between worship, sanctification, and hearing from G-d. Redemption through Messiah allows believers to approach G-d properly and live according to His purposes.

Biblical worship produces transformation, not manipulation, and leads to a life that honors and glorifies G-d.

📖 This Shabbat We Study Parashat Beshalach (When He Sent)

Torah Portion: Beshalach
Torah Reading: Exodus 13:17–17:16
Prophetic Reading: Judges 4:4–5:31

“Faith Is Revealed in the Wilderness”

Parashat Beshalach marks a defining moment in Israel’s redemption journey. HaShem has already delivered His people from Egypt, yet immediately after their deliverance, He leads them into the wilderness—into a place where faith must mature and dependence on Him becomes unavoidable. Redemption is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of transformation.

In this portion, Israel faces the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army behind them. Humanly speaking, there is no escape. Yet HaShem reveals a foundational spiritual truth: deliverance is accomplished not by strategy, strength, or logic, but by trust and obedience. Israel is commanded to move forward before the sea parts. Faith precedes the miracle.

The crossing of the Red Sea is not merely a historical event; it is a theological declaration. HaShem alone fights for His people, while they are called to stand still and believe. Redemption is entirely His work. This theme continues as Israel enters the wilderness, where they encounter hunger, thirst, and spiritual testing.

The manna from heaven teaches Israel dependence. They cannot store it, manipulate it, or control it. Each day requires fresh trust. Likewise, the water from the rock reveals that provision flows from obedience, even when circumstances appear impossible. The wilderness exposes what is in the heart and teaches the people to walk by faith, not by sight.

The Prophetic Reading reinforces this message through the story of Deborah. Victory over Sisera does not come through military power alone, but through submission to HaShem’s word and timing. Once again, HaShem demonstrates that deliverance belongs to Him, and He chooses to work through those who trust and obey Him.

Parashat Beshalach teaches us that redemption does not eliminate struggle, but it redefines it. The wilderness is not a sign of abandonment—it is a classroom where HaShem shapes faith, obedience, and identity.

💡 Timeless lessons from Parashat Beshalach:

1️⃣ Redemption Leads to Testing, Not Comfort — Faith is refined in the wilderness.
2️⃣ Faith Precedes the Miracle — Obedience comes before deliverance is seen.
3️⃣ Dependence Is Learned Daily — HaShem provides what is needed, when it is needed.
4️⃣ Victory Belongs to HaShem Alone — Human strength cannot replace divine intervention.
5️⃣ The Wilderness Reveals the Heart — Trust is formed through trials, not ease.

🕊️ May this Shabbat remind us
that the wilderness is not a detour,
but a divine appointment—
where faith is strengthened,
dependence is learned,
and trust in HaShem becomes our way of life.
