واقعہ کربلا کی بنیاد 680 عیسوی میں یزید بن معاویہ کی خلافت کے خلاف امام حسین علیہ السلام کی بغاوت تھی۔ یزید ایک ظالم اور جابر حکمران تھا اور اس نے اسلام کی بنیادی تعلیمات کی خلاف ورزی کی تھی۔ امام حسین علیہ السلام نے یزید کی بیعت کرنے سے انکار کر دیا اور اپنے اہل خانہ اور ساتھیوں کے ساتھ مکہ سے عراق کے شہر کربلا کی طرف روانہ ہوئے۔
