Celebrating Appalachia

Welcome! Glad you stopped by and hope you stop by often as I celebrate my Appalachian Heritage.

My name is Tipper Pressley. I was born and raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I’ve always had a great love and appreciation for my rich Appalachian culture and heritage. In March of 2008 I started the Blind Pig & the Acorn blog in an effort to preserve and celebrate Appalachia.

This channel will continue my endeavor of celebrating the rich culture and heritage of the Appalachian Mountains.

Happy Resurrection Day

Legend of the Dogwood

At the time of the crucifixion, the dogwood had reached the size of the mighty oak tree. So strong and firm was the wood that it was chosen as the timber for Jesus’ cross.

To be used for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the dogwood. While nailed upon it, Jesus sensed this, and in his compassion said. “Because of your pity for my suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used for a cross. Henceforth, it shall be slender, bent, and twisted, and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross–two long and two short petals.

“In the center of the outer edge of each petal will be the print of nails. In the center of the flower, stained with blood, will be a crown of thorns so that all who see it will remember.”

(Taken from an old postcard that was in Miss Cindy’s Grandmother’s collection.)

Celebrating Appalachia

Sorry no live this morning. YouTube is having some technical issues. I even tried another computer and tried going live on the Blind Pig & the Acorn channel too. Nothing worked. I'm sorry I was looking forward to visiting with you all this morning!

We made it fine through the storm. We are so sorry for those who didn't and are praying for them all. So much damage, loss, and destruction. Also please remember to pray for one another-we are praying for each of you. Please continue to remember Janice, Chubs, Brenda, and Cathy. Also remember Baby Silas, and our friend Wendi who will have surgery this Wednesday. Long time subscriber MamaStyles is also in the hospital please remember her.

We hope you have a wonderful week!! We love you all!! I'll see you next Monday for a live visit. Surely they will have it fixed by then : )

Sorry about the comments not working on tonight's video. I'm not sure why YouTube has them turned off. Maybe a glitch that will fix itself? Or maybe the photos of Matt as a baby caused them to be turned off. Either way sorry we can't chat in the comment section. Feel free to share your thoughts here and hopefully if it's a glitch they will fix it soon! Thank you for all you do for us!!

Celebrating Appalachia

Today we published the last ever video for our annual Train Series. You can see the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tnR0... Wow it's been a great 6 years and we couldn't think of anyone better to go out with than Doyle Dykes. At the end of the video (Wabash Cannonball) Paul added clips of all the folks who have played train songs with him over the years. If you'd like to see the entire playlist of the series go here: www.youtube.com/playlist?list... Impossible to pick a favorite from the series but right up there at the top for me are The Evening Train (a real tear jerker), Sand Mountain Blues (old Delmore Brothers song), and the Freight Train Boogie (good music and funny video). A big thank you to everyone who has been part of the Train Series—from playing, singing, to watching we appreciate you all!

We've published the next song in this year's Train Series: Folsom Prison Blues. Doyle and Caleb Dykes join Paul and my they do some fancy guitar picking 😊 Doyle also tells a fascinating story about Merle Travis and Johnny Cash. You can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPG4n...
