BREAKING: Indiana state lawmakers have rejected a proposed map creating two new heavily red-leaning districts that would have given an edge to President Donald Trump's hotly contested redistricting campaign.

The state senate voted down, 31 to 19, a plan that would have made Indiana join a half-dozen other states that passed new congressional election maps ahead of the 2026 midterms.

The map would have given Republicans gains nationally, as both parties engage in a multi-state redistricting face-off to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives during Trump's final two years in office.

As #PresidentTrump touts a rebounding economy and downplays affordability concerns, new polling suggests most Americans aren't seeing the improvements ‒ and some are making significant sacrifices to save money.

Findings in a poll released Dec. 11 from the progressive think tank the Century Foundation, shared exclusively with USA TODAY, show rising costs are taking a heavy toll on the American family, with the working class bearing the brunt of what the group calls an "affordability crisis."

Nearly 3 in 10 of voters polled said they held off getting medical care over the past year because of costs. One-third said they have skipped a meal. Two-thirds of respondents said they are buying cheaper groceries or buying less food, while half said they dipped into savings to cover basic expenses.

The Geminid #meteorshower will peak this week, according to the American Meteor Society, offering skywatchers who are strong enough to face December's chilly temperatures with stunning views on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14.

"The Geminids meteor shower is considered to be one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers," NASA said in a statement.

Under perfect conditions, the Geminids have been known to produce over 120 meteors per hour, #NASA says.

The United States has seized an oil tanker off the coast of #Venezuela amid a monthslong buildup of military forces surrounding the country, according to news reports and a person familiar with the matter.

The vessel was under U.S. sanctions, according to Bloomberg and people with knowledge of the matter.

It comes after the U.S. has built up military forces around Venezuela for months in a pressure campaign by the Trump administration to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Big change for student loan borrowers: The #EducationDepartment has proposed a legal settlement that would end the #SAVErepaymentplan.

If approved by the courts, the settlement will require that no new borrowers are enrolled in the SAVE program, which based monthly bills on borrowers' incomes and was hailed by the Biden administration as the most affordable student loan repayment option in history. The department will also deny any pending SAVE applications and move current borrowers into different repayment plans.

More than 7 million borrowers have been in limbo for over a year, with payments paused since June 2024 and interest restarting this August.
