Only two weeks apart, yet the difference in their maturity, movements, alertness, and overall appearance was striking.

It was a beautiful reminder of just how much development happens inside the womb, even in a matter of days.

A collodion baby is a newborn covered at birth by a tight, shiny, transparent skin-like membrane. It happens because the outer layer of the skin does not develop normally before birth.

The membrane usually peels off over the first few weeks, revealing the baby's underlying skin. Most importantly, these babies need careful care to prevent dehydration, infection, temperature problems, and skin cracking.

In simple words: “A baby born wrapped in a tight, shiny membrane that later sheds, revealing the skin underneath.”

Elephantiasis means a body part becomes very large and swollen because the lymphatic system, which normally drains extra fluid from tissues, is not working properly.

In a newborn, true elephantiasis caused by the filarial worm is extremely unlikely. If a baby is born with a very swollen leg, arm, or genital area, it is more likely due to a problem in the lymph vessels that developed before birth.

So, in a newborn, we would usually call it congenital lymphedema, rather than true elephantiasis.

Cryptophthalmos ("hidden eye") is a rare congenital anomaly where eyelids fail to form, causing skin to pass directly from the forehead to the cheek over a malformed eyeball. It results in absent palpebral fissures, usually with underlying eye defects like microphthalmia. It is often associated with Fraser syndrome (syndactyly, genitourinary defects).
