I'm Chelsea Lang, an award-winning portrait painter and founder of The Alla Prima Bootcamp.

My mentees have gone on to win major awards, earn gallery representation, and create the strongest work of their careers.

I help experienced oil painters solve the problems that fundamentals alone can't fix:

• Why your work isn't standing out
• How to create more expressive portraits
• How to develop your unique artistic voice
• How to turn reference photos into compelling paintings
• How to build a body of work worthy of recognition

If you're ready to move beyond "good technique" and create portraits people remember, you're in the right place.

I'm putting together a video to show oil painters exactly what they need to work on to go from good to great.
If you paint people or animals and you're not sure what's holding your work back, submit here: painterly.work/826review

I need two things: the inspiration board from my last video, and one painting of your own.

If I think I can help, I'll feature your art and break down what's keeping you from that next stage of growth.

Submissions close in 24 hours.

Chelsea

P.S. No board yet? Watch the last video and make one. I'll be doing more of these.

A TON of you asked me for the secret weapon that I made that stops second-guessing the drawing, stop overworking, and start painting portraits that actually feel alive. Check out how it works and how to get it HERE - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFes-...

I just made a secret weapon for oil painters chasing that effortless Sargent look. Stop second-guessing the drawing, stop overworking, and start painting portraits that actually feel alive. Want me to send it over?

How do you turn a reference photo into a painted portrait that feels like art?
If that's something you're struggling with too, I have a workshop walking through this, step by step: painterly.work/4ecwDpc

Here are a few of the questions you asked that it answers:

• How do I stop just copying the photo?
• How do I tell a story or communicate something meaningful?
• How do I crop a portrait without it feeling awkward?
• How do I create a background that feels intentional?
• How do I use vignettes, composition, and design to make the painting stronger?

I think these are all versions of the same challenge: making artistic decisions instead of simply recording what the camera saw.

I'm also going to turn this into a future YouTube video because it's clearly something a lot of painters wrestle with.

And seriously, thank you for all the thoughtful responses. They've given me a lot of ideas for future videos!

I'd love your help.

As this channel has grown, I've realized the videos I'm most excited to make are the ones where I can help painters create stronger, more compelling portraits in oil. Not just "how to paint a face," but how to create portraits that people will cross rooms to get a closer look at.

I know some people originally found my channel for other reasons, and that's okay. But the place I've consistently been able to help people the most is experienced oil painters who want to take their portrait work to the next level.

I'd also love to make more videos that feel personal and conversational, rather than just tutorials. The kinds of things I'd tell a friend on a long drive to a workshop.

So tell me:

What's the biggest challenge you're facing right now when it comes to creating painting that stand out?

What's something you've struggled to find a clear answer to, even after taking workshops, watching videos, or studying with other artists?

I'd love to hear where you're stuck -- your answers may inspire future videos!
