Capcom has recently announced the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection, a compilation of Marvel arcade classics developed by Capcom in the 90s.
Over the past few years, Capcom has made significant efforts to bring back many classic games in compilation formats for modern platforms, such as multiple Mega Man legacy collections, Capcom Arcade Stadium, Capcom Beat 'em Up Bundle, Capcom Fighting Collection, and more.
Bringing these classic retro games back to life via emulation, with added modern features like online play, training mode, art gallery, game soundtracks, etc.
This got me thinking: should we ask for a Resident Evil Classic Collection? Alongside all the remakes and future remakes that the publisher is strategically promoting, as well as the ongoing sequels of the series.
The remakes offer a fresh new look with various enhancements to elevate the experience. However, a remake is still a different game from the original, no matter how faithfully it tries to replicate it.
Yes, the original is outdated in many ways, but it's all about experiencing its charm of an era. Without the original, there would be no remake.
If you want to play the original Resident Evil trilogy on modern platforms, currently there is only Resident Evil 1 on PlayStation 4 or 5 under PS+ Premium subscription. The rest of the trilogy may be added later.`
The original trilogy used to be available on the PlayStation 3 PSN store under PS1 classic backward-compatible library, but the emulation quality was not ideal due to the lack of proper upscaling and visual enhancement.
Another way to play is through emulation. Emulators can provide impressive upscaling and visual enhancements.
I believe we should have a Resident Evil Classic Collection, and Capcom should make it happen. The Resident Evil franchise is currently doing quite well, with more ongoing remake and sequel underway. Capcom could make a one-off classic collection, put some effort into upscaling and enhancing the visuals for modern platforms, and adding some extra content.
For the sake of classic game preservation, and providing an opportunity for younger RE fans to experience the OG classic.
In recent news, a listing for a PC version of the original Resident Evil was spotted on PEGI's website. This has sparked speculation that Capcom may be releasing the original Resident Evil on Steam. Resident Evil was initially released for PC in December 1996, eight months after its release on the original PlayStation.
Let's see how things pan out in the future. It is wishful thinking, but a hopeful one.
