That's my good friend @daniel_ddey The monster @pro_ears edit is from our man @clay.pictures
Dan is a Firefighter/Paramedic and Command Sgt Major in the US Army with plenty of time in bad places. He always has a huge smile on his face, a kind word and good joke to get you smiling too.
He's seen his share of hurt, garbage, carnage, and destruction. In fact, I'd guess he's seen enough for a hundred lifetimes. Why do you think he's carrying that smile?
Life is heavy at times, some days too heavy. None of us can carry all that shit day in and day out, and if you try, it'll break you.
Designed into us are beautifully crafted mechanisms to deal with stress, hurt, pain, rage, fear, and all the other stuff that works hard to squash us like bugs. See @thecheckenginelight For more on that.
I'll post something serious later that matches the tone of this solemn day and reflects more on yesterday, but I'll also live this day.
F those who killed Charlie. F those who crashed planes into our buildings. F those who hate you for embracing freedom.
But....
Do not be overrun by fear, hate, and worry. Remember that freedom goes both ways. Disagree, but do it with honor.
Defend the weak and innocent. Provide aid to those in need. Be your own cavalry and help others if able and don't be a dickhead.
A few lines from Old Thomas Paine from "The Crisis" Dec 23, 1776-
"These are the times that try men's souls. Tyranny like hell is not easily conquered. The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph."
We feel you, Tom, we really do.
The torch of liberty still burns this day.
Carry it with honor.

I first met Charlie when he was still in high-school. I was deeply involved in politics and the 2nd amendment lobby at the time and he was just getting into what became his work the last decade. He was from a community not far from me and was often invited to meetings to get the old folks fired up.
I didn't agree with him on all points, and that's OK. You and I will have some of those points, too. What I did agree on is this. He lived a life of action. He spoke up for his beliefs. That means something to me and it should to you too.
We are now engaged in another huge social change, in many ways, like the 1960s and in many ways different.
When we raise our fists to our neighbors, brothers, or fellow citizens because we disagree, we have learned nothing.
The great Marcus Aurelius said, "The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury,"
We can be better. We can do better. Don't give in to hate, unless it is evil itself that you are directing it to.
Patrick Henry closed his famous address with this, "I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
Charlie lived it.
Do not let evil win. That starts between your ears and under your breast bone.
