The Guess Who

November 1986, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman accepting BMI’s “Million-Air” Award for their song “These Eyes” in NYC. The “Million-Air” Award is given to songwriters, composers, and publishers whose songs accumulate over one million U.S. broadcasting performances. One million performances of “These Eyes” would represent just over 7 years of continuous play. One can only image how many more times this song has been broadcast in the ensuing 39 years.

So Long, Bannatyne is the 8th studio album by The Guess Who. ‘Bannatyne’ is a reference to the street Kurt Winter lived on before purchasing a new home. The lyrics in the song “So long Bannatyne, hello my Chevrier home” refer to Kurt’s move from an apartment on Bannatyne Ave to a home on Chervier Blvd in Winnipeg, MB.

'46201' in the lyrics to 'Sour Suite', written by Burton Cummings and released in 1971 on The Guess Who's album So Long, Bannatyne, refers to the zip code for Indianapolis. Burton was working on the song originally entitled “This Morning”. He was struggling to finish it and on his piano he saw a letter a fan had written with that zip code. In Burton’s words, “…for some strange reason, unknown to me to this very day, I started singing those numbers…and I kinda liked the way they sounded. So, I kept it that way, and suddenly the song felt finished.”
