Mike (Michael “Mick”) Meaney was an Irish labourer and burial artist best known for one of the most extreme endurance stunts ever attempted — being buried alive underground for 61 days in 1968.

🕳️ Who He Was
Full name: Michael “Mick” Meaney (often called Mike Meaney)
Born: circa 1935 in Ballyporeen, County Tipperary, Ireland
Died: 17 February 2003 in Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland

He worked as a builder, labourer and barman in London. After a work accident ended his hopes of becoming a boxer, he sought another way to make a name for himself.

📦 The Burial Stunt (1968)
In February 1968, Meaney undertook a self-imposed ordeal in Kilburn, North London — being entombed alive in a wooden coffin buried about 7 feet (≈ 2 m) underground.

The coffin was specially made and had pipes for air and food, and he could even talk to people by telephone while underground.

He emerged after 61 days — one of the longest voluntary burials at the time. Crowds cheered, and he famously said he’d like to go for 100 days more.

🏆 Record Status and Aftermath
Meaney hoped to secure a Guinness World Record for “longest time spent buried alive,” but no Guinness official was present, so it was never officially recognised.

Around the same period, Bill White — another burial artist — was attempting (and set) similar endurance stunts in the U.S., and later others surpassed the length of Meaney’s burial.

Despite the lack of formal record recognition and failed commercial deals, the stunt brought global media attention. He eventually returned to Ireland without the fame or fortune he hoped for and lived a quieter life.

🪦 Legacy
Meaney’s bizarre feat has remained a point of fascination; it’s been featured in documentaries and local histories, and even a monument was unveiled in his honor in Mitchelstown.
