5 ways to overcome the mental load of being a dad.
The mental load of being a dad can be really heavy — but still hardly ever talked about.
You're trying to hold it all together, be present, be patient, provide, protect and somehow also function on broken sleep and cold coffee.
Men tend to want to show that everything is ok. In reality doing this could cause us more harm than good.
Here are 5 small shifts that could help you ease the mental load:
1. Start your day before the household wakes up — even 10 quiet minutes before the chaos can change everything.
2. Let go of the pressure to do it all. The dishes can wait, read a book with your child then attack those plates when they are sleeping.
3. Remember they’re still learning. 90% of their brain develops before age 5. They are trying to understand you, as much as you are trying to understand them.
4. You're learning too. Fatherhood doesn’t come with a manual. Give yourself permission to not have it all figured out.
5. Don’t carry it all alone. Talk to your wife/ partner etc. Be a team. Your child will feel that love.
None of this makes the mental load disappear, but it can help you carry it differently.
