Mao Zedong rose as a revolutionary leader, guiding the Communist Party to victory in 1949 after years of civil war. To many, he was the architect of a new China—unified, independent, and free from foreign domination.

Still, Mao remained in power until his death in 1976.

Then reality hit.

Falling oil prices exposed deep structural problems. Inflation soared, shortages spread, and stability began to crumble. Even after Chávez’s death in 2013, the system he built continued to unravel, pushing Venezuela into one of the worst economic crises in modern history.
