my 5 year cancer prognosis had a survival rate of 37% in Feb 2020. it is safe to say that i genuinely didn’t envision myself alive in 2025.

I’d love to say that I was strong, ‘thought positive thoughts’, or was ‘brave’ or ‘hopeful’. I wasn’t, honestly. I was getting my ‘affairs in order’ preparing for death.

There’s a lot of helpful sayings in cancer world. ‘Don’t google your diagnosis at 4am in panic mode’ (guilty as charge, some nights was like that 🤷‍♀️)

another one is ‘don’t look at photos of yourself before the diagnosis- you’re in a “new” normal’. Again, guilty as charge 🤷‍♀️, but the more time had gone since the diagnosis, I noticed a shift in the photos: the girl before cancer was lukewarm. career and body image meant more than church and character..But Jesus wasn’t finished.

Not because of me, or a positive attitude, or choosing to have hope, even if those things are great things, I wasn’t strong enough. Jesus was. There’s a divine rest that comes with being a follower of Him. You can rest, no matter what circumstances life throws at you. God will work all things for His good and it goes deeper and deeper in delights right here and now. There’s internal transformation, hope, joy, peacefulness, identity.

So what did I do differently from the girl before the cancer diagnosis? I surrendered to God. Made Him first in every area of my consciousness.

I never thought I’d be alive in 2025. Glory to God. But with Him these 5 years has been the best years of my life and I’m hopeful and excited over the future, because of Him.

Don’t be like me, don’t almost die to surrender, Live for the one who created you and loves you deeply. Life is so much better that way ❤️
