"Creative Intent" is something every photographer should consider... except for beginners.

Because if "creative intent" is just your vision, your camera settings are the tools that translate it to others.

But if you are guessing settings, you may lose some of that vision was meant to be.

Yet if we were to look at the 80/20 of this, what's the one setting that really carries the "feel" of a photo?

Shutter speed.

Something most people can get the core concept of in an afternoon. Yet there's so much nuance to it, as anyone experienced will know.

Don't get bogged down in the theory of shutter speeds. It's boring.

Go shoot the one thing that's always moving yet never goes away:

Water.

Play with different shutter speeds. See what happens. Every shutter speed will give you something a little different.


At the end of the day, most things we photograph are moving objects.

By seeing how shutter speeds change the "feel" of your image, you can bring those lessons to all other genres of photography.

And it's pretty damn fun too
