The First Amendment is a part of the U.S. Bill of Rights that protects five fundamental freedoms from government interference: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition the government. It was adopted in 1791 and prevents Congress from making laws that infringe upon these rights.
