The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a national program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to help individuals and families maximize their tax returns and avoid the fees businesses charge to prepare taxes. If you or your family earned less than $69,000 in 2025, you may qualify for this free tax preparation service! In 2025, the Department of Family Services VITA program prepared a total of 2,380 tax returns which yielded a total federal tax refund amount of $2,867,135. In addition, VITA helped individuals and families claim $1,117,942 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), further maximizing tax benefits to support households. Visit one of the four VITA locations in Fairfax County between Jan. 29 – April 15 to work with our VITA volunteers on your tax return. Walk-ins are welcome, no appointments are needed. Plan your visit by knowing what documents to bring and which location is most convenient for you. In 2025, the Fairfax County Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) assumed oversight of the Crime Solvers tip program, creating a stronger connection between anonymous tips and active investigations. The transition resulted in the program’s most successful year, with record tip volume, major cases solved, and over $16,000 in community rewards. The RTCC received 643 Crime Solvers tips in 2025; the highest annual total in the program’s history following its integration into RTCC operations.
