It turns out that my family on my Mother's side are related to Richard Mentor Johnson, the 9th U.S. vice president with Martin Van Buren. What is rarely mentioned is that Julia Chinn, his common law wife was 7/8th white. There two daughters were given his last name.
Richard was a champion of the common man. There were many accomplishments that were attributed to him such as the first federally funded academy for Native Americans. Richard fought against slavery and his wife Julia was an incredible woman especially considering the times they were living through.
