Shocking! A Small Scratch in Your Pan Releases 9,000 Microplastics While Cooking

Everyday cookware may look harmless, but scratched or damaged pans could be silently adding toxic microplastics into your meals, posing serious health risks over time.

Researchers used Raman imaging to analyze scratched Teflon-coated cookware and discovered that a small scratch can shed at least 9,000 microplastics (and nanoplastics) during cooking.

Deeper cracks allow this number to soar potentially 2.3 million particles in just 30 seconds of food contact!

These particles are PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which comprises the non-stick coating. Even if your pan isn’t visibly damaged, repeated cooking and scraping with metal utensils can wear it down over time and lead to particle release.

Health concerns from ingesting micro‑ and nanoplastics include oxidative stress, immune disruption, inflammation, and possible cardiovascular or endocrine effects though more human research is needed to clarify risks.

What this means for your kitchen:

* Replace non-stick pans showing scratches, flaking, or worn spots—even small marks matter.
* Use wooden, silicone, or stainless steel utensils to avoid abrading the coating.
