Paul and Silas Pray in Prison – Acts 16:16–40

Paul and Silas were preaching the gospel in Philippi when they encountered a slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination. She followed them for days, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation!” (Acts 16:17).

Eventually, Paul, led by the Spirit, commanded the evil spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ, and she was delivered instantly (Acts 16:18).

Her masters became angry because they lost the profit they made from her fortune-telling. They seized Paul and Silas, dragged them to the authorities, and accused them of troubling the city. The crowd joined in the attack, and the magistrates had them beaten with rods and thrown into prison (Acts 16:19–24).

The Midnight Prayer and Miracle

Despite their pain and chains, Paul and Silas refused to complain. Instead,

> “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.”
(Acts 16:25, NIV)

Suddenly, a great earthquake shook the prison, and immediately:

1. All the prison doors flew open

2. Everyone’s chains came loose (Acts 16:26)

The jailer woke up and, thinking the prisoners had escaped, wanted to kill himself. But Paul shouted, “Do not harm yourself, we are all here!” (Acts 16:27–28)

Salvation in the Prison

Trembling, the jailer fell before Paul and Silas and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30).

They replied:

> “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
(Acts 16:31)

That very night, the jailer washed their wounds, and he and his entire household were baptized. Joy filled his home because they had come to believe in God (Acts 16:33–34).

Lesson from the Story

1. Prayer and praise unlock divine intervention

2. God can turn any prison (problem) into a platform for testimony

3. Your worship can bring deliverance not just for you, but for others around you.
