🎶 Highlights from NAMM 2026 🎶

The NAMM Show is always an incredible mix of music, gear, and community — and this year didn’t disappoint. I spent time reconnecting with friends, meeting new ones, and talking shop with some of the most respected names in the recording world. A few standout moments:

🎸 Catching up with guitarist/composer Chris Stark and talking about his upcoming album that I’ll be producing.

🥁 Talking drum sounds with legendary producer David Bendeth (Paramore, Breaking Benjamin, Vertical Horizon). After a panel session, David invited me to check out samples from his upcoming drum plug-in library. In a follow-up one-on-one, I had the chance to dig in and ask him about the techniques and approach behind those massive drum sounds he’s known for.

🎚 Meeting mastering legend Howie Weinberg, whose work includes albums by U2, Garbage, Madonna, and Sheryl Crow.

🎧 Connecting with producer Neal Avron, known for records with Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, Linkin Park, and Weezer.

Between David, Howie, and Neal, they’ve worked on albums that have collectively sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide — an inspiring reminder of the craft and dedication behind great records.

🤘 I also connected with Glenn Spectre from the Spectre Sound Studios YouTube channel and spent time with many other musicians, engineers, and creators who keep pushing music forward.

NAMM is always about the gear — but more importantly, it’s about the people and the shared passion for making great records.

🎸🔥 Just wrapped mastering on this one at Root Cellar 🔥🎸

Mickey King and the Dharma Pilots tearing into the classic “Going Down.”

Co-produced by Mickey King and me, recorded, mixed, and mastered right here at Root Cellar Music Studio.

Great players. Great songs. No shortcuts.

That’s always the goal — capture the performance, build the right tones, and make a record that feels as powerful coming out of the speakers as it did in the room.

If you’ve got songs you believe in and you’re ready to take them all the way, I’d love to work with you.

🔥 TURN IT UP 🔥

I had a blast producing, recording, mixing, and mastering “All A Lie” for @TomAtkinsBand.

This track brings serious heat — ripping guitars from the legendary George Lynch and powerhouse vocals from Atlanta’s own Nathan Smith (@NathanSmithSings).

Big tones. Big energy. No shortcuts.

We pushed this one to hit hard and feel alive.

Crank it up and let me know what you think. Listen to the full song here: youtube.com/playlist?list=OLA...

Sweet travels, Bob Weir.

Our hearts were broken wide open when we heard the news. We’re eternally grateful for the music, the community, and the legacy you helped create.

A dear friend said it best: we’re feeling sad and connected. After the initial shock, we tuned into the Sirius Grateful Dead channel and listened as stories poured in—from the inner circle of the Dead family, friends, and Dead Heads whose lives were forever changed by the music.

What Bob created with the Grateful Dead—and beyond—is a living example of how to be a fully realized, fearless musician. To live authentically. To follow the music wherever it leads. And to invite others along for the ride.

We’ll meet you in the music. 🌹🎶

🎙️ Let’s talk microphones.

At Root Cellar Music Studio, we’ve got well over a dozen vocal mics—and every one of them has its own sweet spot. From intimate singer-songwriters to straight-up punk and metal, the right mic can make all the difference.

Over the last six months, Rob has been deep in the lab—testing, pairing, and dialing things in. After a lot of sessions and careful listening, two favorite mic combinations have emerged.

⚡ Electro-Voice RE20 + Sennheiser 421
This dynamic duo shines on aggressive vocals in rock, punk, and blues.

The 421 delivers that midrange punch, while the RE20 brings smooth, solid body. Dialed to taste, this pairing delivers a world-class vocal with grit and control.

✨ Universal Audio Sphere + AKG 414 XLII
This large-diaphragm condenser pairing delivers exceptional clarity and detail. The Sphere’s ability to adjust polar pattern and proximity after recording adds a level of flexibility that’s hard to beat, while the 414 XLII brings presence and polish. Together, they deliver stunning detail and clarity well beyond their combined $2,500 price tag—rivaling many top-dollar microphones recorded on their own.

Different voices. Different styles. The right tool for the song—every time.

That’s how we capture performances that sound unmistakably like you.🎛️🎶
