Award-winning electro-Māori artist Huia is set to empower with the release of her new 12-track album, ‘KAWAKAWA,’ on October 10th, 2025.

‘KAWAKAWA’ delves deep into themes encapsulated by its title, Kawakawa plant, a Māori rongoa with healing and restorative properties which is woven into the album's core kaupapa. Huia produced 6 of the 12 waiata, with symphony layers by Stewart Allen and music from Baitercell, with Rei, Devin Abrams & Sean Richards. KAWAKAWA is supported by HūHā, Te Māngai Pāho with the Māori HIKO electronic music movement.

Recorded, Mixed and mastered at Auckland's renowned Kog Studio, ‘KAWAKAWA’ is the culmination of extensive creative work by Huia, inspired by her travels to indigenous music communities in Canada, Scotland, Cymru (Wales), Australia and Japan. Beyond the album, Huia is preparing for the release of a multilingual E.P, collaborating with Meta_ (Portugal), Akawui (Mapuche, Canada), alongside other multilingual artists, set for summer 2025/26.

I'll let you in on a secret... I'm at the worst part of releasing an album stage, it's the 'can you listen to what I make' stage... It's cringe, but it's important.

Can I ask you for a cheeky favour to buy my ‘Kawakawa’ Album for $7?

huia.bandcamp.com/album/kawakawa-album

The creation of the album is always amazing, the back and forths, the re-writing, the finished result that instantly sounds unfinished... but the hardest part is asking people to contribute, the listen, to engage, to enjoy. But I'm not giving up! Even though the self-crings factor is at about 90%.

Purchasing this from Bandcamp, you can listen to it offline and it keeps our te reo Māori music visible and in our charts.

I'm proud of my 'Kawakawa' album of affirmation and culture, the 12 waiata (songs) are written as a full sonic journey, and a beautiful way to learn Māori with translations and my art sent to you.

If you have Bandcamp, I will exchange with you too, flick me the link!
Ngā mihi, thank you, arohanui, Huia :)

Kia or whānau. It's so weird creating an album... but she's finished!!!! Mastered and ready to fly... Kia rere!

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I fall in and out of love with what I'm creating through the whole album process. A few of these tunes, such as 'Waiata Ua, Raingsong' tunes, I went in on the last mix test and said to my hubby engineer -

"NO, it's ugly AF, I'm going to re-record all the verses again"... and I'm so glad I did!

One of the most rewarding parts about this Kawakawa Album writing process is that te reo Māorti comes with a bag of d*cks trauma and a quiet 'shame feeling' that Māori doesn't naturally sit in my waha (mouth), YET, I still sing and speak as much as I can, and I've made a whole 12-track album in Māori.

My tīpuna/ancestors and whānau/family are proud of me, I'm proud of me for where I am with te reo Māori, and I just love singing ki te reo Māori katoa, ia rā ia rā (all day every day).

I can feel the 'whatu', the weaving of the broken muka/lines coming together.
My waiata Maia, Nan Māmā' is all about this.

I am so grateful to have my beautiful mentor and sis Lois McIver, to gently steer and interpret my long-winded metaphoric bilingual Kōrerorero (blabbing), into ataahua waiata/beautiful songs filled with imagery, memories and healing. Lois is a gift, a koha, he mautioriori koe hoki, and a beautiful singer too.

October 10th is the release date for the complete album. I have many people to thank, such as:
Kog Studio and Chris Chetland, I can honestly say this wouldn't have been finished without you, and it would be abandoned...

Producers of 6 tunes (I produced half the album), Rei, Devin Abrams, Baitercell and Sean Richards. Thank you for making sweet beats that I can add to. Thanks to Maestra Stewart Allen for your lush strings, and to Te Māngai Pāho for the tautoko. Also, to the Matariki Cultural Foundation for mentoring me internationally, I will do you proud, kkia kaha.

To all my musician whānau/family/besties around the world, people of culture, you know who you are, I am DEEPLY in love with you all and can't wait to see you all again (in 2026, we're weaving a plan).

'Kawakawa' 12 track album is yours on October 10th, with a full online world to explore and lyrics/translations, imagery and more. AND A GIG.. come kanikani/dance with us.

You can go to - www.iamhuia.com - to keep updated on the Kawakawa album and what I will be gifting around the release.
