God Does Like Ugly Written Review By ReedMySole

Another Rap Album of the Year contender with God in the title. Y’all catching the message yet? Jid’s "God Does Like Ugly" is ghetto gospel. JID's grandmother is dead. JID's brother is back in jail. JID's car is broken into. JID is a father. Even though JID is rich, he still can't bring his granny back. She gave him the name of this album - maybe one of the last gifts she gave to him before her passing. Shawty was cold for that. Shawty snapped. Usually, when granny dies, a piece of you dies with her. JID is rich, but he can't get his brother out of jail. No matter how much money he makes, he can't save his brother from his mentality. When you're from them apartments, jail is normal. And when one family member is in jail, everybody in the family is in jail. Life is ugly. But she's also very beautiful. From church to jail, this is the pain and the beauty of being from them apartments. Our ghetto is not your culture. People really died here. Police brutality. Black lives don’t matter.

The pain is very real. So real that sometimes you have to ask yourself, "Does God hate me? Am I cursed?" You go to Vince Staples for wisdom because he is lowkey a guru from the future blessed upon us by the heavens. Vince tells you hush up and understand the beauty, king. Count up homie. Stop counting down. You realize the beauty in all of it, so you hit Cascade on a Sunday and send up a prayer in the parking lot them boys leave the gunplay at home. Of course, they don’t because they are willing to die to feel alive. To find love, you gotta fight for it. You find her, and then y'all slide through the city. What we on tonight, shawty? Do you love me wholeheartedly? Going through the ups and downs of loving someone is beautiful but again also very painful. This album is the duality of life.

The grief in losing a grandparent coupled with the joy in recognizing the gifts they left you. The first half of the album is the ugly side of God. The second half feels like the beautiful side. "Wrk" and "On Mcafee" are the only songs that feel out of place. JID got his name because he was so jittery as a kid. So I feel like these songs are placed where they are to break up the heaviness of the theme. JID is still jittery and will switch it up when he wants. "Of Blue" feels like both themes in one song. Coke. What if heaven is hell and vice versa? More Coke. The song starts off so beautiful, but when JID comes to the mic, he is asking the tough questions. Even more coke.

A beautiful life with an ugly cycle. You have to find the balance. The substance you’re looking for is love. It's family. It's children. "K-word" is the reverse of that. An ugly life with a beautiful cycle. Having a baby is such a mind trip. You realize the world is so terrible. You wonder how the hell your parents did it. You see everything wrong with this planet. At the same time, you have so much hope. You think you can change things and break the cycle with this new life the universe has blessed you with. This is yours to keep. You could focus on the cycle, or you can focus on the life. Life is the ugliest must beautiful journey known to man.

You may be thinking to yourself, wtf is this review. It’s the black experience. It’s all over the place. Sometimes, the point is the experience. It’s not just one thing. This is JID. He’s an artist. I will admit that this album was a little underwhelming after the wave of new music faded. Yes, JID can rap very well, but I still have no clue what his persona is. What is his goal? I feel like all Dreamville artists have an identity issue. This should have been that album for him, but for some reason, it feels like a throwaway. Great throwaway, don’t get me wrong, but God Doesn’t Like Ugly Produced by Metro Boomin sounds like the real album. I’m ready for that.

Scores
Songs: I like 10/15=67 %
Overall: A solid 7 out of 10
My favorite songs: SK8. Wholeheartedly. Glory. VCR. Community. No Boo.

Hot Takes: JID might end up being the Wale of this generation. Super talented but might not be able to get over the hump. JID makes better RnB songs than he makes rap songs. I don’t like Westside Gunn on the intro. WRK should have been left off the album.

Freddie Gibbs's "Alfredo 2" is packed with filler and meaningless raps. The production is decent, but Freddie’s rapping is very average. The disrespect for women on this album is a little too loud and frequent for me. He doesn’t balance it out with a tribute to his momma or another woman in his life. His baby mama cooking for him is the closest thing to saying something respectful about women the whole album. Married people beware. On "I still Love H.E.R", he talking about the RAP Game. Y’all give him and Future way too many passes for their excessive misogyny. I get it but if you hate women so much…… and you’re going to “squeeze Ak titties when you see him” ? His energy is low the entire album, and don’t say that's his style because his "Vultures" feature was very high energy. I find this album, after multiple listens, average. It does not have the emotional depth that LGSEO does. Alfredo 2 is not even in the same league. It’s surface level commentary over some good production. Freddie didn’t take any risks. He didn’t grow. Even his disses were lackluster. 2 bars wowed me. Just 2. Alchemist production carried.

Scores: 4/14 rapping wise. Freddie went 28%. Production 14/14. Alchemist went 100% I give it a 5/10, 50% overall.

Final thoughts: Freddie hides average lyrics behind amazing production. I much rather listen to a “bad” Freddie album than a “good” Lil Yatchy album. I much rather talk about Alfredo 2 than the 2025 Xxl freshman freestyle. If you love the album great. Im not trying to convince you otherwise. I think it’s dope that we don’t agree. I’m not here to be right I’m just here to be me. Peace.
