YOUTHFUL AND USEFUL FRIDAY
WHEN DESIRE GOES OUT OF BOUNDS
Just take a look at these newspaper headlines I stumbled upon recently; FATHER RAPES DAUGTHER, 14 YEARS, MAN HAS SEX WITH A GOAT, LESBIANISM ROCKS SENIOR HIGH SCOOLS, MALE TEACHER ABUSES GIRL, BARBER RAPES GIRL IN PUBLIC, HOW DADDY HAD SEX WITH ME.
The list goes on and on. As I flipped through these press cuttings, what was going through my mind was that all these wouldn’t have come about if these guys didn’t have sexual desire. The sex drive or desire is at the root of all these vices. But the question is, ‘How can such a gift, so gloriously bestowed upon humanity by our creator, suddenly turn destructive and dangerous ?’.
Well, let me answer you with a question. How is that fire which is so helpful in our cooking and even in generating warmth in our rooms can be so destructive to burn down whole buildings?. The answer is; out of bounds! That is the result when fire gets out of bounds. Fire in itself is not a bad thing. It depends on how it is used.
The same thing applies to God’s gift of sexual desire. It is a wonderful gift if it is used within the boundaries God established for it. But when it goes out of bounds, it can be very dangerous and destructive. Anything that is taken out of its established boundaries becomes perverted. When sexual desire is taken out of the boundary God established around it, it becomes perverted and corrupt. Sexual desire that is perverted is called LUST.
2 Peter 1:4
For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by LUST.(NASB)
Here we see that the corruption that is the world came through lust. Lust was born in the garden of Eden. The devil tempted Eve to look outside the boundaries God had established. The moment she started desiring something outside God’s boundaries, her desire was corrupted. She then acted out her perverted desire. So the lust; perverted desire brought sin and sin also brought death. James describes it vividly in
James 1:14-15
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death(NLT)
Now the world is controlled and sustained by lust. Take lust out of the world and the systems of this world will crumble. This is because the systems of this world were designed to satisfy the desires, wishes and aspirations of fallen man and those aspirations are all perverted and out of bounds.
The desires that are in us are God given desires. But when we attempt to satisfy them outside certain boundaries God established, they become perverted. For instance the desire for recognition and significance can easily turn into lust for power if not handled properly. The spiritual appetite for a relationship with God can easily turn into something else if not directed at God.
In effect, any good thing can easily become perverted if it is abused. God’s gift of sexual desire is also like that. The same thing that will let a man leave his parents and seek to bond with a woman, bear children with her, love them and nurture them in the fear of God and as a result build a family, a society and a nation, this same thing can also wreck families and destroy whole nations. The potential offsprings of lust(perverted sexual desires) are very unpleasant. That is why the world is full of many unpleasant news about the wrongful use of sexual desire.
1 John 2:15-16
Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For ALL THAT IS IN THE WORLD, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father, but is from the world(NASB).
Note the phrase ‘All that is in the world’. These three things; lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life, summarize the entire foundation of the world, just as righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost summarize the entire foundation of the kingdom of God.
The three things that summarize the whole world system have one thing in common. They are all desires that have gone out of boundaries and those are what the world system seeks to satisfy. When Satan tempted the first couple and their desires became perverted, it produced sin which later produced death. The devil then established a system that largely affects the hearts and minds of man. This system was designed to accommodate and in fact satisfy the perverted desires of man. That system is what the Bible calls ‘the world’. Is it any wonder that God hates the world and enjoins us to do same?(James 4:4).
SEXUAL ATTRACTION IS NOT ENOUGH FOR MARRIAGE
The attraction between the sexes is so strong and exciting that some young people get the wrong impression that it is enough for marriage. Wrong! A thousand times no!. What will continue to be the foundation for all relationships is the relationship between one and God. If that one is growing, all the others will find meaning and purpose. Don’t just start a relationship with somebody just because you are attracted to the person. That is nothing but attraction. To be motivated just by the attraction is called infatuation. People equate it to love. But it is not the same as love. Love is a nature not feelings.
