Coined by Dan Siegel, your Window of Tolerance (WOT) describes "the best state of 'arousal' or stimulation in which we are able to function and thrive in everyday life."Those who have been affected by chronic stress and trauma tend to have a small Window of Tolerance. This means that it doesn't take much to "push" them out of this balanced state of arousal and healthy functioning. Which of course leads to a lot of suffering and discomfort.
There are 2 categories in which you can stretch your WOT:
1.) Preventatively. The activities in this category are ideally done regularly, building resiliency and strength into the nervous system
2.) Responding: The approaches in this category are ideally offered to self in the midst of dysregulation and big sensations/emotions.Surely, the preventative strategies are wonderfully supportive in the midst of dysregulation as well, however, a more expansive nervous system foundation can be built if one is using them regularly, not just reactively.
What have you found that effectively expands your WOT? 💬🪟💬

It goes against every single instinct to name your parent as unsafe, unprotective or unloving.
Every. Single. Instinct.
If someone has done the hard work to get to this point of naming a more accurate narrative....listen to them. Consider their pain. And please do not judge them.
