Made in China' is no longer the cheapest option
Chinese labour is no longer that cheap: between 2013 and 2022 manufacturing wages doubled, to an average of $8.27 per hour. More important, the deepening techno-decoupling between Beijing and Washington is forcing manufacturers of high-tech products, especially those involving advanced semiconductors, to reconsider their reliance on China.
Increasingly, however, under a weighty combination of commercial and political pressure, foreign companies are beginning to pluck up the courage if not to leave China entirely, then at least to look beyond it for growth.
In 1987 panasonic made an adventurous bet on China. At the time the electronics giant’s home country, Japan, was a global manufacturing powerhouse and the Chinese economy was no larger than Canada’s. So when the company entered a Chinese joint venture to make cathode-ray tubes for its televisions in Beijing, eyebrows were raised. Before long other titans of consumer electronics, from Japan and elsewhere, were also piling into China to take advantage of its abundant and cheap labour. Three-and-a-half decades on, China is the linchpin of the multitrillion-dollar consumer-electronics industry. Its exports of electronic goods and components amounted to $1trn in 2021, out of a global total of $3.3trn. These days, it takes a brave firm to avoid China...

Transition to electric mobility requires a wide range of #rawmaterials. The #battery supply chains consist of multiple complex stages that are spread around the world. From extracting the necessary mineral ores, refining to form sufficient purity chemicals, then advanced material synthesis to form #cathode and #anode materials. While all stages of the supply chain must scale up, extraction and processing are particularly critical due to long lead times.
To meet the demand for #lithiumionbatteries in the next decade, existing and new mineral and precursor processing plants need to be commissioned and reach capacity on time. The market size for raw material processing is estimated to be $62 billion by 2030, with a calculated annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 9%.

Breaking News!!!
Ford will build a $3.5 billon LFP battery plant in Michigan.
Now, it's official.
This new plant will have an annual production capacity of 35 Gwh.
The production will start in 2026.
Ford’s wholly owned subsidiary would manufacture the battery cells using LFP battery cell knowledge and services provided by CATL.
It means that they are going to work together through a license partnership.
Nevertheless, Ford is still committed to purchase LFP battery from CATL from 2024.
It means that Ford vehicles will not qualify for the entire 7500$ tax credit but only 3750$ as the battery will be sourced from China.
In my opinion, Ford has the best approach with the future use of both LFP and NMC chemistries.
They will be able to be more flexible.
VW has the same approach in Europe. But a bit different. At the same plant, VW will manufacture LFP and NMC through different lines of production.
This new announcement confirms a trend outside China. LFP is definitely coming in Europe and USA.
LFP is a low cost alternative to NMC but with its own advantages.
"LFP batteries are very durable and tolerate more frequent and faster charging while using fewer high-demand, high-cost materials. This lower-cost battery, at scale, will help Ford contain or even further reduce EV prices for customers."
If Ford has an EV architecture approach, they can "easily" reduce the energy density gap with NMC batteries.
Tesla was able to do and switch gradually toward more LFP batteries with CATL as supplier.
But one thing unknown is if Ford will be able to use CATL cell to pack technology.
It almost mandatory to get the whole advantage of LFP battery.
The cell-to-pack technology for LFP can reduce the energy density gap with NMC batteries.

Rivian is "bleeding cash" from production hell 2.0

Remember a few years back as Model 3 production ramped up, Musk said Tesla went through "production hell"?
Of course, all incumbent OEMs laughed as the processes, knowledge and culture were all in place to do this repeatedly.
However, its a real thing for every new OEM.
Looking at the article, if Rivian keeps up this cash burn 🔥, they got about 3 years left.
Frankly, this is still a big buffer, but Rivian are facing a lot more headwinds.
Interest rates are high, which will dampen sales, as well as their ability to borrow, commodity prices remain relatively high, and key competitors are lowering prices.
While the latter is having a minor impact, Rivian doesn't really compete with Tesla product, and Ford haven't touched F-150 Lightning prices, even if there's an overall realignment expectation.
Rivian have no choice but to stay the course, be singularly focused onn production and supply chain, and essentially put all new activities aside until that's completed.
This is essentially what Musk did with Tesla.
Rivian is in a critical phase right now, and what happens next will determine their future.
I am confident they will succeed, but to say there's a lot of work to do is a vast understatement.

First movers advantage is always significant in most industries and it has definitely put Tesla ahead of the rest of the pack.
Had General Motors not canned the EV1 it could've had 'first mover advantage', and perhaps they do in a parallel universe, but back IRL Tesla's lead gives it untold strengths. A case of catch us if you can...

Just in case you’re wondering how much China and the Asian nations control the battery manufacturing market, here is a good pictorial description. The earlier all other countries begin to practically prepare to manufacture their own cells the better for them otherwise we’ll all remain held by the Chinese communist government because it is clear these battery manufacturers such as CATL are at the government’s mercy.
