Happy 10 years of BURNITUP!

To some it may seem silly to make a whole thing out of what’s “just” a video, but to me it became so much more.

In 2015 I’d been in London for about two years, still finding my feet—I was struggling financially, juggling classes/auditions, & dealing with the loneliness of starting over in another country. On top of that, my lower back was wrecked from a 3 year injury & I wore heating belts tied around my waist just to cope. If you look closely, you can actually see them in the video. Learning to care for my body later changed everything.

I remember loosely brainstorming project ideas with now longtime friend & collaborator Mike Dones after filming my class. We had only just met. “You should do something that brings the LDN community together.” He said. That spark started it all. Same day Janet dropped BURNITUP! with immaculate timing. Jackpot.

One night after taking Sisco Gomez’s class I was trying to figure out the “why” & overall message of the vid & remembered something he said about staying versatile. Suddenly it clicked—this shouldn’t just be my choreography. It should be a mix of voices & love letter to the city I was falling in love with. I ran into my best friend Anders Deeno’s room—two Danes sharing a flat with ten strangers—& frantically pitched the idea. He was game.

From there it all became a whirlwind. I divided sections, coordinated rehearsals, shot when we could & trusted Mike on the days I couldn’t be there. We had no time to properly lock in locations, so we often just showed up, prayed we wouldn’t get kicked out, & shot in one take. In hindsight the randomness & the people walking through the frame became part of the charm. A little precursor to TikTok dances in public, you could say. & the universe threw us miracles—like the light switching from blue to red right on the beat at the O2. Two chaotic weeks later it was done.

The video blew up, Janet reposted it & everything shifted. It opened doors, expanded my world & maybe most importantly—left me with a deeper hunger to create work that actually connects & moves people.

We live in a time where sharing your art can truly change everything. Don’t hold back. If an idea won’t leave you alone, that’s your sign. Go make it.

It’s a whole 3:30 minutes of pure dancing - oh and I know that anything past 40 seconds can be daunting nowadays, but please try to watch it to the end. We would all really appreciate it.

I have created a ton a conceptual dance visuals and shorts over the course of my career (maybe even too many lol) but this one is different and special in a whole new way.

Most of the individuals a part of this video have been there since the beginning of my journey in LA, consistently showing up to every class from the ones with low numbers to the sold out ones. Every single dancer kept showing up and has put in the work in my intensives and now still in Anomaly Dance Company as members.

So yes it’s a whole different type of special cause I’ve been teaching and mentoring these individuals for a very long time. Witnessing them being capable of fully owning and performing my choreography (+ so much more) and on a scale that goes way past just a short class combo. If you’ve taken my class then you know - That takes hard work. That takes consistency. Accountability. Determination - All the fancy words, but mostly - it takes time and it takes caring enough to go that extra mile.

It’s cool to care people. It’s cool to go that extra mile. It’s cool to push yourself to the point where you feel and look crazy. It’s cool to embrace growth and be vulnerable in the process.

Damn it, I’m so proud of this group! That’s all.
