Florante Aguilar is one of the most active figures in Philippine traditional music today. His arrangements and compositions reveal a deep understanding of the form, successfully crafting the right balance between respect and redefinition of a tradition.
His constant search for a tradition-based contemporary Filipino sound led him to champion harana music - songs used in the now-vanished Filipino courtship ritual of serenading. Aguilar's compositions, which use strong Philippine motifs in a modern context, include works for guitar, octavina, violincello, percussion, as well as song cycles and a zarzuela.

The last time I returned to my hometown in Cavite after many years, I felt a bit saddened. The place I grew up in had changed a lot. The asinan or irasan (salt beds) I used to bike past as a kid were gone, and the bustling oyster vendors along the coast had disappeared. What was once a quiet, rural province had turned into a congested, urban landscape, with the coastline filled with “esteros” (polluted waterways). Even the language felt different—more Tag-lish than the deep Tagalog I remember.
Change happens, but some memories just stay with you. About the only thing I can do is write a song and reminisce. Here is that song.
