For the last year I have been pouring my soul into a Virtual Marimba Concert presented by Portland Columbia Symphony. I think it safe to say that this will be the first Virtual recording/performance of a marimba concerto in history, and what better piece to be the virtual first than Ney Rosauro's Concerto for Marimba and Percussion Ensemble No. 1. Come on out on Friday night to watch me pop some serious marimba wheelies accompanied by some of my students, the filmmaker Erwin Darmali, the paintings of Kenton Nelson, and an amazing group of musicians from Portland Columbia Symphony and more!
CALLING ALL MARIMBA SOLOISTS, PERCUSSIONISTS, DRUMMERS, AND CLAPPERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, LET'S PLAY "LEAN ON ME" TOGETHER VIRTUALLY TO BRING A LITTLE LIGHT TO A DARK TIME!
These uncertain times and social distancing have made it more important than ever to reach out to our larger community to show love, support and a little bit of hope. Technology makes the idea of coming together virtually possible, and many musical groups have taken advantage of this idea to the benefit of all. The choral conductor Eric Whitacre has assembled thousands of virtual singers into one video (I can’t watch these without crying). And Rotterdam Orchestra just released part of Beethoven’s Ninth Virtually which I linked below. High School and Middle School bands have also been releasing these virtual performances on YouTube and they are so powerful, almost more powerful than a live performance given the fact that each player/singer was in a different part of the world when recording their video. I have always wanted to do this, and there couldn’t be a better time than now! I can’t teach my normal MarimbaLab classes, so I will open up MarimbaLab to the world! Let’s virtually come together with marimba and percussion (or clapping) to create something incredibly beautiful and inspirational in this dark time. I can’t think of a better song than Bill Wither’s Lean On Me. Let’s Lean on Each Other Virtually!
