"ICE confirmer" indicted in local obstruction case blocking traffic while out on bond.


Mel Flores, a 37‑year‑old Army veteran and self‑described “community confirmer,” is facing three Class 2 Misdemeanor charges — obstructing government operations, obstructing a peace officer, and reckless endangerment — for allegedly interfering with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents last October. In an affidavit filed by Sgt. David Fisher of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, ICE Agents David Rash and Alex Williams reported being followed for several miles on October 17 while conducting surveillance near Drennan Industrial Loop in Colorado Springs, CO. The agents said a man — later identified as Flores — pursued their unmarked vehicle through multiple construction zones, honking and shouting “La Migra!” out of his window. When Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop him outside their headquarters, Flores allegedly reversed into oncoming traffic before speeding away. Fisher wrote that the behavior not only disrupted active surveillance work but also created a hazard to other drivers. Flores disputes the allegations. He maintains that his actions fall under protected observation and free‑speech rights — Flores has been an active member the "Colorado Rapid Response Network" (CORRN), a collective of immigration‑rights groups, which includes the Socialists aligned "Colorado Springs Alliance Against Racism and Political Repression" (COSAARPR). The Rapid Response Network exists primarily to dispatch “confirmers” to federal enforcement activity.

Now, while free on bond, Flores has once again made headlines after halting oncoming traffic durring a recent protest. On Friday, First Amendment Media released footage captured in Colorado Springs on January 10th of Flores standing in the middle of a downtown road, directing traffic to stop. Several vehicles can be seen hesitating before detouring around him, one nearly colliding with him while proceeding foward. Many downtown businesses describe growing frustration with protests spilling into traffic lanes. “We all believe in free speech,” said one bar owner, “but when someone blocks cars... that’s not activism, that’s chaos.”

At press time, Flores remains free on $400 bond. His next court date is scheduled for February 10th, in El Paso County Court, where prosecutors will continue pursuing the October charges. The Flores case has become an early 2026 flashpoint — one testing the thin line between watchdog engagement and unlawful interference.

From Evergreen to “Stop ICE”: The Rise of Militant Activism and Movement Piggybacking in America


Across the United States, protest movements have become flashpoints not just for reform, but for ideological transformation. What begin as humanitarian or justice-based campaigns can quickly evolve into confrontational, militant movements. Critics argue that certain socialist and Anarchist factions have learned to piggyback—that is, to attach themselves to popular causes like “Stop ICE” and steer them toward revolutionary goals.
This phenomenon is not without precedent. The 2017 upheaval at Evergreen State College in Washington State offers a revealing case study in how local activism can escalate into ideological militancy, providing a glimpse into the evolving tactics of radicalized protest movements nationwide.
In the spring of 2017, what began as a dispute over a proposed “Day of Absence”—voluntary campus diversity event—spiraled into full-scale occupation and confrontation. When biology professor Bret Weinstein questioned the framework of the event, the situation rapidly intensified. Student activists accused college leadership of institutional racism and demanded that administrators meet their terms.
Soon, large groups of protesters occupied academic buildings, barricaded doors, and patrolled the campus with makeshift weapons such as baseball bats. Video footage later circulated showing faculty members surrounded by chanting activists, administrators prevented from leaving certain rooms, and law enforcement staying away after being told by the college president that their presence might escalate tensions.
This same model has echoed through more recent movements—from environmental blockades to ICE protests. The underlying logic is consistent: the system is seen as so corrupt that direct disruption becomes not only justified but morally necessary.
We can look at a recent example found in Colorado Springs, where socialist coalitions and people calling themselves “ICE Confirmers” have physically blocked streets, surrounded government buildings, and antagonized officers sent to keep order. Much like Evergreen’s protestors, many in these groups argue that institutions cannot be reformed from within. For them, disruption is not the byproduct of protest, it is the protest. This is precisely the space where socialist and anarchist organizers thrive, using spontaneous uprisings as recruitment grounds to push systemic critiques of capitalism, policing, and governance.
In effect, movements like “Stop ICE” become a contemporary manifestation of movement piggybacking: broad-based moral causes serving as platforms for revolutionary aspirations. In the 1960s, the Weather Underground emerged from peaceful anti-war protests, eventually adopting militant tactics to “force societal awakening.”
During the Occupy Wall Street era, anarchist collectives used the movement’s anti-inequality message to introduce a more radical anti-capitalist framework.
Evergreen, in many ways, was a pilot episode for this 21st-century iteration—a local campus revolt that previewed the fusion of social justice rhetoric with coercive, revolutionary strategy. Digital organizing and decentralized networks have only accelerated this evolution. Activist groups today can mobilize rapidly, coordinate flash blockades, and film confrontations for social media virality. This not only spreads their message but creates an emotional narrative of resistance that recruits new members.
The danger, critics warn, lies in the normalization of escalation. When institutions respond with concession rather than enforcement, it validates militancy as an effective political tool. Whether on a college campus or a city street, moral outrage becomes the fuse, and ideology becomes the accelerant.
From the corridors of Evergreen State College to the streets outside ICE offices, a new strain of activism has emerged—one that blurs the line between reform and revolution. Through movement piggybacking, militant groups have learned to anchor themselves within broader public movements, amplifying their vision of systemic upheaval under the guise of humanitarian action. The lesson from Evergreen to “Stop ICE” is clear: when moral protest merges with ideological militancy, movements risk losing their original cause.

This was a calculated choice. Venezuela has resources the United States wants, and the United States has the leverage and support Venezuela needs. It was a path we knowingly chose, fully aware of the risks involved.

Love it or hate it, do not accept the narrative at face value. This was not imposed on us. We chose this path.”
