He has scored 111 goals in only 125 games since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. His basic salary will be around £500,000 a week.

“I am super happy,” said Haaland. “I am proud. It is difficult to put into words because it is a big moment. I am happy and that is the right word to use. I am looking forward to staying here for a long time.

“In the end, speaking with the people I spoke with, the hunger and the support that I have been getting for the last couple of years from the board, from the bosses and from Pep, it was an easy decision. I am delighted.”

Ashley Young says he is “gutted” that he did not get the chance to play against his son Tyler in Everton’s FA Cup ties against Peterborough last night.

Ashley, who said playing against his son would have “topped everything in his career”, came on as a substitute, but Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson kept Tyler on the bench for the full 90 minutes.

Ferguson defended his decision, saying: “I’ve got to do what is best for my team. One of their players had a pop at me, which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case.”

Football Weekly looks ahead to the FA Cup third round ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBycY...

The Everton v Peterborough cup tie tonight has the potential to create history. There is a chance that 39-year-old Ashley Young will find himself on the same pitch as his 18-year-old son, Tyler, a promising midfielder who signed for the League One club last summer ► www.theguardian.com/football/2025/jan/08/young-v-y…

“If there was a possibility that we play against each other, it tops everything I’ve done in my career,” says Ashley Young.

“Hopefully, come game day we’re able to get on the same pitch. I’ve said it since the draw came out – it would be a goosebumps moment for me.

“It’ll be a massive moment for Tyler as well. He’s just starting out in his career, so for him to be able to showcase his talents in a fantastic stadium in front of a sell-out crowd – the most fans he will have played in front of – would be fantastic.”

Neymar says reuniting with his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez at Inter Miami would be “incredible” as he approaches the end of his contract with Al-Hilal ► www.theguardian.com/football/2025/jan/07/neymar-hi…
Guardian Football Weekly ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-7EV...

The Brazilian struck up a lethal partnership with Messi and Suárez to lead Barcelona to the treble in 2015 before his record-breaking $230m move to PSG in 2017.

“Obviously, playing again with Messi and Suárez would be incredible. They are my friends, we still speak to each other,” said Neymar. “It would be interesting to revive this trio. I’m happy at Al-Hilal, I’m happy in Saudi Arabia, but who knows. Football is full of surprises.”

Neymar has played only seven times for Al-Hilal since moving from PSG for a reported fee of 90m euros in 2023, with injuries keeping him sidelined for long periods. His contract ends in June.

Marcus Rashford’s almost 20-year association with Manchester United looks set to come to an end ► www.theguardian.com/football/2024/dec/17/marcus-ra…

The striker said: “I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.” The England international was dropped from the squad for the Manchester derby victory over City on Sunday and the club are open to selling him.

Ruben Amorim however has insisted Marcus Rashford is not close to leaving Manchester United and urged the forward to embrace the “biggest challenge” of proving himself at his boyhood club.

United’s head coach insisted he wants Rashford to stay. “Of course, because this kind of club needs big talent and he’s a big talent, so he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus,” Amorim said.

Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk has been provisionally suspended from football after being notified of a positive drugs test by the Football Association ► www.theguardian.com/football/2024/dec/17/chelsea-m…
Guardian Football Weekly ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dnpG...

The winger has not featured in the club’s past five matches. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s manager, has cited illness as the cause of Mudryk’s absence.

However it has emerged that Mudryk, who has struggled since joining Chelsea for £89m in January 2023, has been missing since producing a contaminated ‘A’ sample. The Ukraine international is waiting to find out whether the result of a ‘B’ sample confirms the initial findings.

A club statement said: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk concerning an adverse finding in a routine urine test.

“Both the club and Mykhailo fully support the FA’s testing programme and all our players, including Mykhailo, are regularly tested. Mykhailo has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. Both Mykhailo and the club will now work with the relevant authorities to establish what has caused the adverse finding. The club will not be commenting any further.”

Mudryk posted on Instagram: “This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules, and am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened.

“I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can.”

Amad finish in the Manchester derby while O’Neil and Martin bid farewell | Football Weekly ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dnpG...

When Ruben Amorim oversaw his previous victory over Manchester City – with his old club Sporting in the Champions League – it was to push the reigning Premier League champions towards crisis. That was in early November and it was City’s third defeat on the spin.

As Amorim repeated the trick, it was to pep up his new project at Manchester United and leave Pep Guardiola on his knees. There seems no way out of the misery for the City manager, this an eighth defeat in 11 matches in all competitions, the decline of his all-conquering team stark and extraordinary.

For so long, it had looked as though City would close out a much-needed victory thanks to Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header. They had played meekly but United had no cutting edge. They were powder-puff in the final third. And then, at the very end, they were not and they could embrace a result which Amorim will try to use as a catalyst.

It was Amad Diallo, the stand-out performer of Amorim’s fledging tenure, who made the difference. First, he won a penalty after City’s emergency left-back, Matheus Nunes, left a back-pass woefully short. Diallo tricked Nunes into a rash tackle with a cute stop-and-go move and Bruno Fernandes buried the equaliser from the penalty spot.

To United’s delight, there was more. Diallo was alert to run onto a long pass and his first touch was a beauty, taking it up and to the side of the advancing Ederson. The second was not bad, either, a volley from a tight angle that squeezed over the line, Gvardiol unable to clear from just in front of it.

City had won the previous three derbies in the league here – and scored 13 goals in them. There was only anguish and continued disbelief on this occasion. The insecurities are everywhere.
