Meanings is a collection of music written between 2020 and 2024 - more of an anthology than a conceptual album, but still tied together by genre and certain ideas. It’s mostly orchestral, with a rhythmic feel and some electronic touches here and there, though not as much solo piano as usual.
Some of these pieces go way back - one track, Noise, was actually written in 2012, even before Kai Engel existed as a project. Unlike Farewells, which was almost fully acoustic and very personal, this album isn’t about one particular theme. It’s more of a look back at different moments in time rather than something that redefines my past work.
It also bridges the gap between Farewells and what’s coming next. My next release will lean more into electronic music - something I haven’t focused on in a long time. It won’t be a complete shift, but there will definitely be some new elements. More on that soon.
For now, I just hope you listen and find your own meaning in it.
By the way, Bandcamp remains the most convenient way to support my work However, there is also a Patreon if you wish some early access things: www.patreon.com/c/kaiengel
Hey everyone! How is it going? Two weeks ago, I had a livestream, and I was told there that some of you tend to listen to my music on the channel. This means some of you have not heard about my recent releases, such as Shard and Farewells. Is that so?
Should I upload releases here as separate videos? And if so - would it be ok if it will be one video/per release?
Also, I'm thinking about streaming more in the future, should I schedule it and announce it here? How do you feel about all these things? I'm asking because not announcing and starting a stream when I feel like it seems a little more comfortable and may increase the frequency of such live streams. On the other hand, i understand that some of you may feel a little FOMO here. That's why I'm asking for your opinion. Will read through all the comments as always.
When i was young, i've heard about Ukraine here and there. Some jokes, some stories, maybe something from TV about revolutions there. In 2014, when Euromaidan (Revolution of Dignity) happened, by first impression i fully supported it. After that, Russia, my country, decided to capture Crimea and started war at Donbass. My close ukrainian friend (he was not so close in 2014), when i've asked him "what's up" said: "When you'll get your tanks away i will be ok". It hurted me and for some reason i've changed my position about Euromaidan. I've started to support Russia and was supported it for few months. Until I’ve started to dig in situation, research history and political situation deeper. When russians say today "it's my country i support it whatever my president do" i even can understand their feeling a little. If we don't talk about massive war actions with dying people in thousands.
They ask "Where you've been for 8 years?"
I can answer. These 8 years I read books, became better, immersed myself in knowledge about politics and history. I formed my views.
I've fallen in love with ukrainian culture and people, with this cities and landscapes, with their music and language.
I was in a relationship (6 years!) with a Ukrainian woman whom I married in 2021, almost all my close friends are from Ukraine. I moved there my studio, my life, even my clothes. We had a place where we lived.
When Russia started this war i was in Russia, i was not in bed so i've started to call my wife and my friends, in order to say "Putin started war. Wake up!"
I will never forgive it. I will never forgive Putin, his government and it's supporters for what they've done to Ukraine, to ukrainian people, to my beloved cities, to my family, to my friends.
So. I've moved to Ukraine and could not take all the tools and equipment with me. Now is a difficult time for all countries, and not the best time to move, but I have been walking towards this decision for many years.
To continue working I have no keyboard since everything else - at a minimum - I was able to take away in my luggage.
Yesterday I launched fundraising on Instagram and among my friends, hoping to raise $ 400 for new keys. Quite simple, but better than nothing. As a result, I raised $ 550 in 23 hours.
When fundraising was finished, it turned out that there are people who wanted to support me but did not have time, so I decided to continue the collection.
Perhaps we will raise $ 1100 and I will be able to take native instruments mk2 88
If not - I will take something cheaper.
