We got a PUPPY! Which means I've been low on sleep (and free time). Instead of letting my movement practices slip away, I ask this question: HOW CAN I? And make things happen especially when my energy is low, my body is achy, and I'm short on time.

How do you stay consistent with your health and wellness routines?

12 years ago I "retired" from running. I didn't want to, but my right hip kept getting jammed. I tried stretching, bodywork, rehab, chiropractic. Nothing moved the needle. The only way I could stay out of pain was NO RUNNING.

The last 8 years, I've been on a strength building journey. Slowly infusing my 20-year yoga practice with sneaky strength, bands and weights.

The last thing I expected was running again... but for the last year I've been running 4 or 5 times per week.

It didn't happen over night. And it required outer hip strengthening. Here's one of my favorite poses.

After about 35, stretching isn't enough for aches and pains. You need strength.

For example, this shoulder opener at the wall becomes much more effective when your upper back is strong.

When you have the strength to maintain it, the stretch sticks. If not, you get temporary relief without real change.

Here's a good axiom: Stretch what's tight. Strengthen what's weak.

Core strength might be easier than you think. You just need 2 things. And they're both easier than crunches.

#1: Ribcage stacked over pelvis
#2: Breathing driven by your diaphragm

Check out this short for a demonstration.

A few months ago, I started getting compliments on my arms. Like in the grocery store. And I got to thinking about how they developed so suddenly. It was when I was rehabbing my wrist.

During that time, I was focused on core stabilization for my shoulders so I could lift without aggravating my wrist. Bonus: it did amazing things for my arms too.

I bet this is true for most women. Our center of gravity is lower. Our upper body is harder to develop than men. We must begin with a stable core.

Watch this short for some of my favorites.

I did not like being told that I needed to add load to build bone. I wanted yoga to be enough. But as I entered perimenopause, I had to face the facts. And evolve my practice.

This 25-minute practice to Build Bone is how I added strength, resistance and load to my yoga practice.

It's safe for osteoporosis and osteopenia, there is no deep flexing or twisting. It's a fantastic on-ramp for safe, sustainable strength building that you actually enjoy.

Four. There are just four movement patterns you need to train for every day strength.
✅Push
✅Pull
✅Lunge
✅Squat

But within those 4 there are endless variations. See my faves in this short:

Did I waste 20 years practicing yoga?

I've asked myself this question during the last few years because my flexibility became a liability.

When I started strength training I felt weak and behind.

But then I discovered how to use my yoga experience as a SUPERPOWER. Check out this short for more.

It's like you lose strength suddenly. Not slowly.

All of a sudden the groceries and the laundry seem heavier.
Your knees get cranky going downstairs.
Your shoulder gets tweaky when you shut the hatch or lift the heavy skillet.
Getting off the floor requires effort (and grunting)

It's not just you! It's everybody over 40. And the way to keep the aging avalanche at bay? Train the Functional Four. Here's a glimpse.
