The legendary Stax Records was founded by Jim Stewart in 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee. It rose from a small, family-operated company to become one of the most influential soul music record labels in the world, helping create “The Memphis Sound” and launching the careers of icons such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, The Bar-Kays, and dozens of other artists who helped change popular culture forever. In all, Stax placed 167 hit songs in the Top 100 in Pop and 243 hits in the Top 100 in R&B.

Stax Records and the Soulsville Foundation are saddened to hear of the passing of #SteveCropper.
A founding member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Cropper’s distinctive guitar work, production, and songwriting helped shape the Memphis soul sound. A trusted songwriting collaborator artists like #OtisRedding, #EddieFloyd, and others, Cropper played a vital role in countless Stax recording sessions throughout the 1960s and into 1970.
As the co-writer of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Knock On Wood,” and “In the Midnight Hour,” he leaves a legacy that stands with the legends of 20th-century soul music.

This week in 1972, #StaxRecords staged the #Wattstax concert festival in the Los Angeles Coliseum. ⬇️ It as a celebration of African American music, culture, and more than 100K people attended the show— paying $1 to attend.
The concert served as both a fundraiser and a healing opportunity in the wake of the Watts rebellion of 1965. Stax artists Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus and Carla Thomas, as well as Jesse Jackson serving as the MC, performed gospel, funk, and R&B over a seven hour period. Los Angeles made August 20th Wattstax Day in 2022 to commemorate the historic event.
