Something interesting from CA Inter Jan 26 exams 👀

I had prepared 15 SM questions as part of my Super 30 for Paper 6.
In the exam, 6 questions came from those, covering 30 marks out of 35 from the descriptive portion of SM.

Why profit comes just before IPO for new age startups?

In the last two months, both Urban Company and Lenskart have filed for their IPOs.
And both became “profitable” in the year right before it.

But here’s the twist —
That profit came mainly because of a one-time accounting gain, not from their regular business.

🟢 Urban Company:
Till last year – Loss making.
In FY25 – profit of ₹240 crore.
Reason? A one-time recognition of deferred tax asset of about ₹211 crore.

🟢 Lenskart:
Till last year – Loss making
In FY25 — Core profit was around ₹130 crore.
But reported profit jumped to ₹297 crore.
Reason? A one-time non-cash gain of ₹167 crore related to revaluation of deferred payments from an old acquisition deal of Owndays, Japanese eyewear chain

So yes, both companies turned profitable… but mostly on paper.

As retail investors, maybe it’s time to ask
👉 Are we investing in solid businesses, or just following the greater fool theory? Where Promoters, PE firms, VCs, other fund houses are quietly exiting leaving nothing on table for public.

Every CA student has the same books and the same time so why do some still succeed while others don’t?

Two farmers prayed for rain during a long drought.
One kept waiting and complaining, while the other quietly prepared his field.

When the rain finally came, only the one who had prepared could sow his seeds.

Both got the same rain but the one who ploughed the land and worked hard everyday was ready to make use of it.

Just like that, every student gets the same syllabus, the same books, and the same time.
But only those who prepare every day, put in those long hours - even when the results seem far are ready when the opportunity finally arrives.
