Six Black people have reportedly been found hanging in publicly reported cases during 2026—primarily across Southern states.

In this initial report, Dr. Rashad Richey examines the deaths and the speed with which authorities have characterized several of them as suicides or stated that there was no evidence of foul play.

The reported cases include:

• Kyle Bassinga, 21 — Georgia
• Juliana Umba Nzita, 16 — North Carolina
• To’Nea Nicole Miller, 27 — Florida
• Justice Kai James, 21 — Georgia
• Jerard “Jay” Jackson
• Tasia Fortune, 29 — Mississippi

These deaths have not all been officially classified as homicides or lynchings. However, families, advocates and community members are asking whether every case received the thorough, independent and transparent investigation it deserved.

A Black person hanging from a tree carries an unmistakable history in America. That history does not prove how any individual died—but it makes a rushed or incomplete investigation unacceptable.

We are not declaring conclusions without evidence.

We are demanding that evidence be collected, preserved, independently examined and publicly explained.
