Her name is Poetry, and she embodies Eternity. She was named Phillis after the ship that transported her, and her last name, Wheatley, came from the merchant who purchased her. Originally from The Gambia, she was brought to America as a young girl.

By the age of thirteen, she was already composing poetry in a language that was not her native tongue. Despite her talent, many doubted that she was the true author of her works. At just twenty, Phillis faced a formidable challenge when she was summoned before a court of eighteen distinguished gentlemen, all clad in formal attire and wigs.

During this rigorous examination, she had to recite passages from Virgil, Milton, and biblical texts. Additionally, she was required to attest that her poems were original and not plagiarized. From her chair, she confidently delivered her responses until the court finally acknowledged her talent. Though she was a woman, a person of color, and a slave, she proved herself to be a poet of remarkable skill.

Phillis Wheatley became the first African American author to publish a book in the United States, paving the way for future generations of writers and artists. Her legacy continues to inspire countless individuals today.

The Ndau people are a distinct ethnic group located in central Mozambique and southeastern Zimbabwe. They have a complex history that involves interactions with other groups, including the Nguni. The Ndau culture is a fascinating blend of influences, and their language is recognized in the Zimbabwean constitution as a distinct language.

Historical records suggest that the Ndau people were also involved in trade with Khoisan groups and Arab merchants, and trade networks of Mapungubwe and Great Zimbabwe. The Portuguese missionary João dos Santos documented their distinct linguistic and cultural identity in the 1500s in his book "Ethiopia Oriental". According to dos Santos, the Ndau people traded goods such as traditional herbs, spiritual powers, animal skins, and bones with Arabs in exchange for colored cloths (Mpalu, Njeti, and Vukotlo) and golden beads.

The origin of the name "Ndau" is debated, with some theories suggesting it comes from the traditional greeting "Ndau wee!", while others propose it means "those who seek a place" or "land", translated from Nguni as "Umadingindawo".

# Ndau Groups
The five largest Ndau groups are:

- Magova
- Mashanga
- Vatomboti
- Madanda
- Teve

# Nguni Influence
Soshangane, a Nguni leader, established the Gaza Kingdom, which spread across Mozambique and Zimbabwe, subjugating many Ndau people and incorporating Nguni elements into their culture and language. This led to intermarriage and the integration of Nguni ancestry into Ndau lineage.

# Surnames and Cultural Practices
Many Ndau words, surnames, and cultural practices have Nguni origins. Examples of Ndau surnames with Nguni origins include:

- Semwayo
-Moyana
- Simango
- Thabethe
- Sibiya
- Dliwayo
- Dube/Mhlanga
- Makuyana
- Ndlukula
- Mlambo/Muyambo
- Mthethwa
- Thodlana
- Nxumalo
- Hlatshwayo
- Sithole
-Mdluyi
-Ndlovu

# Traditional and Modern Dances
The Ndau people have several traditional dances, with Muchongoyo being the main one. However, some groups, such as the Changane, also perform this dance, calling it "Mutsongolo". Modern Ndau dances include Zvigande, Mandlozi, Mukapa, and Chitonga, which have been influenced by other tribes.

# Identity and Relationship with Other Groups
There is a contrasting narrative about the identity of the Ndau people. Some describe the Ndau as a sub-group of the Shona people, while others argue that they have a distinct cultural, political, and linguistic identity.

# Geographic Distribution
Today, the Ndau people can be found in the districts of Chipinge and Chimanimani in Zimbabwe, as well as in areas of Bikita and the Zambezi valley. They also inhabit regions in central Mozambique, including Dondo, Machanga, Muxungwe, Buzi, Machaze, Chibavava, Musorizi, and Dombe, extending to the coast. Additionally, they have a presence in central Malawi.
