Teaching toddlers how to express their feelings through words is one of the most important steps in preventing aggressive behaviour. Often, young children show frustration through hitting, pushing, or screaming simply because they don’t yet have the language to explain how they feel.

As educators and caregivers, we can gently guide them toward emotional expression. During play, daily routines, or challenging moments, use simple words like “I’m mad,” “I’m sad,” “I feel happy,” or “I’m scared.” These short phrases help toddlers recognize and name their emotions. Over time, this builds self-awareness and empathy toward others.

You can support this learning through emotion cards, mirrors, or books about feelings — tools that make emotions visible and relatable. For example, looking in a mirror and saying “I feel sad” helps the child connect facial expressions with emotions. Reading books about happy or angry characters helps them understand that feelings are natural and everyone experiences them.

When children learn to communicate emotions through words instead of actions, they gain confidence and emotional balance. This approach not only reduces aggression but also creates a calmer, more connected classroom or home environment.

✨ Remember: Every feeling is valid — it’s how we teach children to express them that shapes their emotional growth.

Instead of labeling a child as “aggressive,” let’s take a step back and ask what in their environment feels overwhelming or unsafe. Every child deserves understanding, patience, and support—especially autistic children.

✅ Support neurodiverse children with empathy and care.
