I have been meaning to make a video about my self steering design, but ‪@garymalm‬ beat me to it!
And he also built his own version of it! (including several differences, but it seems to work well!)

for more upcoming proa content subscribe to @YdocFrench
here is a proa he's built that's like my proa but stretched to 4.8m

I'm looking forward to seeing his sailing video!

an ancient catamaran found in vietnam?
vietnamnet.vn/en/ancient-boats-discovered-in-bac-n…

Can't see the shape of the bottom of the hull, but one archelogist is standing at the rear of one hull and it's up to his shoulders, so it seems like it might be a deep V - so it could sail to windward, and also would not float upright on it's own. That suggests this maybe is a catamaran (or proa) and not just two canoes that happen to be next to each other.

There is still a lot of digging to do before we learn everything!

I recently visited John Channings, who built this junk rig bilge keeler and sailed it, engineless, from New Zealand to Alaska! (and back!) in the early 80s. When I was restoring the wharram this was next door, and ticks a lot of my boxes, but I saw the wharram first! I think it would be well worth restoring (quite a lot of work but cheaper than building from scratch)

Here is my video checking out the current state of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrZVH...

@waughthogwaugh3078 pretty much just what you described, "'I've often wondered about a lateen sail (sans boom) suspended in an A-frame" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4IAG...

this was on trademe recently, a "happycat" It looks like you wouldn't be sheet out very far. hmm it could be good if you could change the angle of the yard... it seems like it should be possible to have the sail roller furling too. But it wouldn't be so simple then!

I nearly brought this boat in 2020, a few months before I found a wharram pahi 31 on the side of the road...

www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/boats-marine/yachts/oth…

would have been a very different channel, with a lot more welding and probably no proas!
great boat though someone should get it! it does have a centerboard so pretty shallow draft for a keeler 1m I think!

Was repacking the books (getting ready to relaunch!) And found the first sketch of the proa! Fitting it into 3 sheets was a design goal from the very start. I originally was thinking a diamond section ama, but switched to square to reduce build time.
