Pressure, deadlines, comparison, the constant noise… it makes you forget the simple truths that actually keep you moving forward. These three always bring me back to center, especially when I feel stuck or behind.

01 — Your taste will always grow faster than your skills.
This is normal. Not a sign that you are behind.

02 — Most of your best work will come from imperfect starts.
Not clarity. Not confidence. Just showing up and trying.

03 — Nobody is thinking about your work as much as you are.
Stop holding back because of imaginary critics.

Save this for the next time your head gets louder than your work.

A few things I’ve learned after talking to 20+ creatives — from type designers and illustrators to CEOs and Grammy winners:

• You’ll probably never feel 100% ready. Start anyway.
• The labels people put on you don’t define you.
• Growth feels a lot like fear.
• Even the “pros” are figuring it out as they go.
• You get to decide what to keep — and what to let go of.

These aren’t just quotes. They’re titles from my Monday Break(Through) podcast series — short solo episodes recorded between bigger conversations, when I was deep in it myself.

🎧 If you’re in it right now, start here: captnoffscript.com/

Or just save this for the next time self-doubt tries to sneak in.

Which one resonates with where you are today?

Swedish design agency ‪@snasksthlm‬ turned their back on grayscale minimalism and built a creative empire fueled by color, chaos, and rock & roll. In this moment from CAPTN OffScript, Erik and Freddie explain why standing out in a sea of sameness was the only way forward.

I have to admit, this is one of the most candid episodes I’ve ever recorded. Kristy was casually sitting on the floor of her bedroom, sipping from a pink can, sharing her stories and opening up in a way that made me - an introvert to the core - feel completely at ease. And we recorded everything in one take, without a single edit or cut.

There was something effortless about this conversation. Maybe it was her energy, maybe the giant pink pony in her studio, or maybe just the honesty she brought to every answer. Whatever it was, we went deep - without even trying.

In this week’s episode of CAPTN OffScript, I sit down with Kristy Campbell, the New Zealand-based designer behind the bold and unforgettable brand Pink Pony Creative. You might know her from Instagram or the Adobe MAX stage - but in this episode, you’ll get to know her in a whole different way.

Kristy shares how a 100-day design challenge during the early days of COVID turned into a global creative studio that now generates over 7 figures a year. She opens up about navigating motherhood while running a business, building systems that allow her team to thrive without her micromanaging, and how she learned to stop chasing perfection and start embracing who she really is.

Give it a listen - especially if you’ve ever felt like your “weird” didn’t belong in your creative career. This one might just flip that on its head.

What does it really mean to be a designer in 2025?

That’s the question that kicked off Season 2 of CAPTN OffScript – and what started as one conversation turned into two full episodes about creativity, authenticity, AI, and the future of our industry.

CAPTN OffScript

Here we go! A little reintroduction.

When I launched The Type Convo, it felt like the perfect name. I was interviewing type designers, creatives working with fonts, and people from the world I’ve always called home.

But something started happening. The more I talked to my guests, the less we stayed on the topic of type. We talked about imposter syndrome. Burnout. Building things from nothing. Childhood. Joy. Loneliness. Pivoting careers. Redefining success.

And those were the conversations people loved most.

So after a lot of thought, I’m officially rebranding the podcast to CAPTN OffScript.

Why this name?

Because it reflects what the show has become. A space where bold creatives speak freely, without filters, without pre-planned questions, without pretending. It’s personal, real, and yes, unscripted.

CAPTN is also a nod to my roots. My last name literally means “captain’s son,” and over time, that idea of steering your own journey, navigating without a map, became a part of who I am and how I create.

So this is it. The Type Convo is now CAPTN OffScript. Same voice. Same energy. More room to grow.
