An 18-year-old relative of J. Stuart Adams was charged with multiple first-degree felonies, including child rape and child sodomy, for having sex with a 13-year-old girl; a crime that, under existing Utah law, could result in decades of prison time and mandatory registration as a sex offender.

During the legal process, Utah lawmakers passed Senate Bill 213, a bill that fundamentally changed the way such cases could be prosecuted. The law created a lesser offense, specifically for situations where the accused is an 18-year-old high school student and the alleged victim is significantly younger.

SB213 allowed prosecutors more discretion. Instead of only having the option to file the most severe charges, they could opt to charge an 18-year-old high school student with a third-degree felony for “unlawful sexual activity,” which carries much lighter penalties. Previously, this third-degree charge was available only for 17-year-olds in similar circumstances.

Although the law was not retroactive (i.e. it didn’t apply to cases already underway), both the defense and prosecution acknowledged that the new law influenced the plea deal for Adams’ relative. The accused ended up pleading guilty to a much lesser charge, serving only a week in jail, and was not required to register as a sex offender.

J. Stuart Adams admitted he asked the legislature to review the law in light of his relative’s case but denied directly intervening or drafting the new bill. The official sponsor of the bill, Republican Senate Leader Kirk Cullimore, also acknowledged Adams’ request for review.

Critics, including the mother of the 13-year-old victim, alleged that the law was essentially tailored to benefit Adams’ family and that the legal process gave “special treatment” otherwise not available to average defendants. The controversy sparked widespread concern that the process undermined the principle of equal justice and put victims’ interests last.

Now, for more fun facts:

Utah has one of the highest reported rates of child sexual abuse and sex offenses in the U.S. Recent research indicates that about 1 in 7 Utah children experience sexual abuse by age 18: higher than the national average of 1 in 9. For girls and young women in Utah, the numbers are starker: 1 in 5 experience sexual abuse.

A major 2025 study found that Alaska, Utah, and Montana have the highest overall rates of sex offenses in the country.

78.7% of all sexual assault victims in Utah report being assaulted before age 18, and more than one-third were assaulted before age 10. Many cases are never reported, so real rates are almost certainly higher.

My point? The president may be a pedophile, but so are the leaders of the best state in America according to usnews.com. If that doesn't scare you, nothing will.

I genuinely regret not posting anything on the night of June 30th. I was ready to stream that whole day just to get online and spend three hours trying and failing to get my Steam accounts back. After that, I was just done with the day.
