Someone recently asked me to suggest the types (designs) of shoe lasts that are ideal for beginners.
Below pictures are examples. NOT exactly what I did when I was starting out but certainly what I wish I did.
Buy these designs. Emphasis on DESIGNS not the material they are made of. Ironically, I prefer the plastic ones to those made out of wood. Now, please climate lovers don't come after me. The plastic isn't single use. It stays in use for decades.
Pros 1. With these you can make Oxfords, Derbys, Loafers and Sneakers. With a little modification, you can make boots too. Even Chelsea boots.
2. These styles are evergreen. No matter what is happening in the fashion world, majority of people will wear shoes that are shaped on these lasts. To exemplify this, the pandemic came and everyone switched to Crocs and similarly sacrilegious footwear. These designs emerged from all that dirt without a stain on their shirts.
3. The lateral and medial sides of these designs are more or less similar in dimensions so these last will hide your pattern making mistakes.
We have been invited by the Cobblers and Leather Artisans Association of Nigeria (Ogun State Branch) to speak on Fundamentals of Footwear Patterns so we will be live again by 8pm GMT+1.
