I rarely reach for a torch—but when I do, it’s usually because access has become the entire repair.

This is the end of my whale tail after working along the edge of a sunroof. The roof brace was bonded so tightly to the outer skin that reaching the very lip—where the glass rests—meant heating the tip and carefully punching through the stubborn panel adhesive. 🔥

That blue, purple, and gold finish? 🌈

Those are temper colors—the evidence of what it took to create access.

When a dent sits on the edge of a panel with tight double bracing behind it, you may not be able to place a tool on the damage until you make a path. Sometimes that means sacrificing the finish on your tool, heating the tip, and working through the adhesive one controlled move at a time.

⚠️ Beginners, be careful. You’re working near glass, adhesive, coatings, wiring, headliners, and painted exterior metal. Understand what’s behind the panel, control your heat, and never rush the process.

But when access is limited and the repair demands it…

Heat the tip. Make the path. Get a tool on the damage.

TWO WEEKS. YEARS OF GROWTH. ⚔️

What a killer two weeks.

From the moment George and Kerry walked into the shop, I could feel how seriously they took this investment in themselves. They didn’t just show up for training—they showed up ready to WORK.

They gave me their focus. They gave me their effort. They asked questions, took correction, made adjustments, and put in the reps. We operated from day one with the expectation that we were building toward a professional level of performance.

Before they came out, they had already talked between themselves about what they hoped to accomplish. If they could leave a little better than they came in, they would consider it a win.

They didn’t leave a little better.

The amount of growth I watched happen in these two guys over just TWO WEEKS is the kind of development I’ve seen take some technicians YEARS of trial and error to figure out.

And that’s what happens when good information meets serious effort.

They earned every bit of their progress.

I’m extremely proud of these two—not only for what they accomplished here, but for the technicians I believe they’re going to become. And the cool part is, our relationship doesn’t end because the two weeks are over. They’re now part of an ongoing network and community built around continuing to sharpen this craft together.

And keep your eyes on these guys for another reason…

They’ve got some PDR tools in the works, and after hearing and seeing some of the ideas they’re developing, I think they’re going to bring some VERY creative things to this industry.

Great students. Creative minds. Even better dudes.

George and Kerry—you guys absolutely killed it.

PRECISION FIRST. POWER COMES LAST. ⚔️

Today was Day Two of PDR training, and we got into the Five Principles of Proper Push Technique.

George and Kerry started with a challenge I give beginners intentionally: push a high spot. I set targets on the panel and asked them to make the metal move.

Especially on aluminum, the natural reaction is almost always the same:

MORE POWER. MORE INTENSITY. PUSH HARDER.

Then we changed the assignment.

We stopped chasing movement and started implementing the principles.

Precision. Flex & Rhythm. Pattern. Passes. Intensity.

They slowed down.

They committed to a pattern.

When they lost their tool tip or got off target, instead of guessing and continuing to push, they found a reset point outside the damage, re-oriented themselves, relocated their tool tip, and walked the tool back into the damage.

Most importantly, they stopped pushing with the need to “see metal move.”

And that’s when the metal started moving.

Cleaner.

More predictably.

And with far less effort.

That is one of the biggest lessons I want a beginner to experience firsthand.

When your precision improves, your tool tip stays active, your rhythm becomes consistent, and you introduce energy intentionally, you begin realizing that you don’t need nearly as much power as you thought you did.

You’re not trying to overpower the panel.

You’re learning to work with the material.

The science of the metal has to be a priority.

It demands PRECISION.

It demands PATIENCE.

It demands INTENTION.

And when those things are present, intensity becomes something you control—not something you depend on.

Don’t force the metal to move.
Learn what makes it WANT to move.

Day Two. George and Kerry are putting the pieces together.

Now WORK HARD and GO BE GREAT.
