🌟Book Review: The House of Special Purpose by John Boyne
This was my first novel by John Boyne - but it definitely won’t be my last. The House of Special Purpose is a beautifully written and carefully researched work of historical fiction that left a lasting impression on me.
The story centers around the fall of the Romanov dynasty and the tragic events of the Russian Revolution. We meet the main character decades later, living in exile, and from the very beginning there’s a quiet mystery surrounding his past in Russia. What truly happened? How did he survive? The answers unfold gradually, with the narrative moving back and forth across different periods of his life.
Although the timeline shifts frequently, it’s done in a seamless and unique way that deepens the emotional impact rather than distracting from it. Boyne’s writing is elegant and atmospheric, bringing both imperial Russia and revolutionary turmoil vividly to life.
While I can’t say this is my all-time favorite historical novel, it’s undoubtedly a high-quality read that fans of the genre will appreciate. What impressed me most was the historical accuracy. After finishing the book, I found myself watching documentaries and researching the Romanovs - and to my surprise, the historical facts closely aligned with the events portrayed in the novel. It’s clear that Boyne did extensive research to ground the story in real history.
Overall, The House of Special Purpose is a compelling, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted historical fiction novel that I absolutely recommend.

Finished my first Riley Sager book - Home Before Dark 📚
I went in expecting full-on haunted house horror, but it leaned more toward thriller and I honestly struggled to get through it 👻 Just not my kind of story this time around.
Have you read it? What did you think?

🌟Book Review: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
I can see why The Bell Jar is considered a modern classic - it’s a deeply personal and unique reflection of its time, and there’s no denying the emotional weight behind Plath’s writing. There were rare moments that made me pause and reflect, but overall, I struggled with this book.
It nearly pushed me into a reading slump. I had previously DNF’d it and picked it up again hoping I’d connect with it more the second time around - unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Perhaps it just found me at the wrong moment, or maybe the themes of depression and suicide are ones I find particularly difficult to engage with.
Either way, finishing it felt more like a challenge than a journey.
I didn’t enjoy the reading experience, and I was honestly relieved when it was over. That said, I’m still glad I read it - if only to understand why it resonates with others and holds such a place in literary history. While it’s a book that may speak to many, it didn’t speak to me.

🌟 Book Review: Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa
I enjoyed this book - not because it was groundbreaking, but because it felt like the perfect cozy read for an autumn evening, especially if you're into quiet, bookish stories. There are some interesting references to Japanese literature throughout, which added to the charm.
What stood out most to me was the ending. From the first page, I had no idea it would go in that direction, and I love that about Japanese literature in general. With Western books, I often find myself predicting the plot, but Japanese storytelling follows a different rhythm and logic. It often leaves me thinking, “Oh… that’s what this was really about?”- and I mean that in the best way.
If you’re not expecting a fast-paced plot and you’re in the mood for something gentle and introspective, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is a lovely little escape.
